VR is a lot of fun even if its just for the experience, play Dirt and being able to look around was quite fun amongst other things

    Ooh, nice price!

In a bargain theme, I would recommend you install Steam VR on Steam, and on there grab "The Lab" for free.

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

I got it today, first thing I did was clean it.

it was sent in the box but the left controller had come lose and the ring is cracked, now I think that's got IR led's in it to track the position, I don't know if it's working or not because I missed a couple of important factors.
1- you now need facebook account to even install the rift s software
2- you need windows 10 to set it up

so until I upgrade I'm stuck not knowing if it's even working my own damb fault

edit: and yes I planned on using steam vr and never facebook marketplace

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

A bit tricky, but take a look through a phone selfie camera and you can see IR sources on most phones. You might find you can see the leds which will be dotted all over the outer surface of the ring.

Those rings do take a beating, tbh I'm surprised my old Rift controllers aren't cracked. I smacked them into the wall often enough, the things are covered in paint scraped off the walls. I needed a bigger room for VR That does make me suspect that simple rattling around the box wouldn't damage a hand controller.

I just tried on my two rifts. On the old CV1, just pressing the trigger woke up the controller and I could see the LEDs on my phone. On the Quest 2 I had to wake up the headset before the controller lights came on. Maybe that's part of why the old Rift seemed to get through batteries quite fast.

Didn't know myself that you needed W10 to install Rift. It is quite an old OS at this point, so I suppose it isn't surprising. I thought you could still get away without Facebook, but the clock is ticking to the point I wouldn't bother fighting that.

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

reading around the facebook change was back in oct although if you have an oculus account you can still use that, but a new user has to have a facebook account

interesting on the IR pretty sure I've got a camera which can do it, I'll have to dig it out.
When I say cracked, I think snapped would be a better description, it's still in one part but the ring cracked all the way through.

EDIT: I think I found some older windows 7 setup&driver files so I'll give them ago tonight

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

Was it bought from a business? You can still contact the seller and tell them about the issue.

As for Facebook thats the reason why I stay away from the Oculus range now, I have an Oculus account but even that will run out eventually, while I appreciate nearly anything you buy vr wise needs some type of account, facebook is not one I will ever have.

Away from that I loved the VR experience the Rift gave, yes had problems with an odd shaped room and roomspace but the actual experience of VR was great.

Now though I would go with inside out tracking just for the sheer simplicity it brings.

Good luck with it mate and hope you get that controller sorted

Did you have any luck getting the left controller working, and with Win 7 drivers?

No I found a link to someone's copy of the support folder from the old version that supported win7 (which has the drivers) unfortunately it looks the file (a rar) was corrupted and I couldn't unpack it.
So I bit the bullet and finally upgraded to win10 I do like some bits of win10, but some bits of it I really hate, eg the search function and the settings system
I've had to do a repair on the oculus software, which means it's now redownloading everything instead of reinstalling what it's downloaded before I hate software that only has a online installer.
for sake programmers/developers include a full install for those who want it!

EDIT: esp when your damb installer has a 5gb software download at only 1.5 MB/s

well it goes on, the tracking isn't functioning I think it's a usb3 driver issue

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

Oh dear. You still on the FX8350 system in your profile tab? My original Rift uses three USB 3 ports, I ended up buying a PCIe to USB3 card to stop constant whinging about the last camera connection being USB2 on my FX8350 board, though I still have the card plugged in in my new system as you can't have enough USB3.x

In the Oculus software there should be a "devices" tab where it will have green lights against USB connections it thinks are OK. I've had to swap them about a bit.

Fingers crossed you sort it out.

On a more positive note, I fired up Asgard's Wrath last night, the free game from the Quest 2 that has cost me a fortune getting an SSD upgrade so I can install it Very nicely done, am enjoying it a it a lot so far. Another one that needs lots of space to play though.

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

Yes I am on that system, it's still chugging along nicely, although if I wanted to push anything past this gtx970 then cpu is going to be a major bottle neck.
But with availability as it currently is, I'm waiting on my major upgrade, hence getting vr instead.

the rift s only needs the 1 usb3 as it doesn't use external lighthouse type sensors, the microsoft drivers don't work so I "updated" to the correct ASMedia drivers, it gets a step further but still has issues at the tracking stage.
I think I tracked down the issue last night, I had a couple of bsod while trying to get it setup looking at the logs I think it's a current issue.
I'm borrowing a usb3 card from work today to test out over the weekend, although that is going to be fun as the only cards we have used a floppy power connector for additional power, it's been a long time since I used one of these, I'm pretty sure I've got an adaptor in my box of stuff if there's not one in my psu cables

EDIT: It's going to make a total mess of my lovely cable management

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

I was using an FX8350 for some time on VR, until there was an update on Elite Dangerous that made it max out all the cores. TBH, having upgraded the GPU and CPU since then it still chugs a little, I think that is just VR bugs in Elite that if you spend too long in an asteroid belt then combat start to chug. Guess what I like doing in Elite

Floppy power? Eek, good luck with that. The last USB 3 card I bought had a regulator on card to drive a USB C connector as well as the type A. These things are getting both power and bandwidth hungry, it's no wonder modern motherboards are getting more expensive.

Yeah, it's a tricky time to upgrade. I was going to upgrade the wife's FX6350 to a Ryzen 3600 with B450 motherboard and 16GB of 3200MHz ram which I figured even with current pricing was about £350. Ended up 5600X on a B550 motherboard, 32GB of 3200MHz ECC ram and a 1TB NVMe SSD so broke the budget by a factor of two. Credit card bill arrived yesterday, I haven't opened it yet

Ryzen 3600 with B450 motherboard and 16GB of 3200MHz ram
that's basically what I was planning on or maybe a 2nd hand 2700 on the basis that I could go 5xxx later and maybe an RTX3070

but with current prices and supply I'm holding off.

as too floppy power, they are the same electrical rating as the common 4pin molex, just a different end is all and I've got an adaptor, this is just as a test to see if I can track down the issues, long term I might get one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Sup.../dp/B00B6ZCNGM that's getting power from sata

Depending on where you are in VR, you need to remember there are walls etc around you, its so easy to think you have miles of space, even with the room safe stuff turned on
