Rise of the Triad - ROTT - Ludicrous remaster for 2023

    Releasing in 2023, hopefully Q1

Fond memories of the original game, if brief! My time was mostly spent on Doom II, Hexen, Heretic & Duke 3D
Still yet to play the 2013 sequel/remake whatever it was though I hear it is certainly playable.

While the remaster is staying completely faithful to the original, it is technically a new engine, they had to reverse engineer the game due to the loss of the original source code. But now they have control and are adding a new episode.

    Interesting....

I realise I know nothing about game devving, but can they not get the source code from any copy of the original game, or something?

Someone with more knowledge would be able to describe it better than me but I see it as, if you were to take apart a house (game source code) to work out the materials used it doesn't give you back the tools & machinery to rebuild it (game engine). You can work out that a certain tool was used but you'd have to go great lengths to try and recreate that tool if someone lost the design prints to it, and you'd probably never make it exactly the same as the original.

It's a very similar project to Dark Forces where they lost the source code to the engine, this guy has taken quite a while to make a new one:

Reverse engineering code is hard. You can get some sort of code out of a binary with a sort of reverse compile, and such tools exist, but what you get out is really hard to read. So basically, for any decent level of changes you are often better off just re-writing something from scratch. That way you use the latest tools, latest methods, and techniques you are most comfortable with for those things where there are lots of ways to achieve a goal.
