Looked at the Rift when we were initially thinking of getting a headset - did seem the better option at the time, but Lenovo had an offer on their Explorer that made it £400 cheaper (than the Rift) so we went with that. This thread actually made me look into them a little more again. Have been reading about problems people are having with nvidia's 30XX series drivers and problems with Quest 2 streaming... so, yeah, I'm not really in any hurry to jump back in yet. Can't say I'm really seeing any games on the horizon that seem like must plays too to be honest - triple A devs seem to still be giving VR a wide berth.

Also, if you're pretty rusty, might I respectfully suggest a Sidewinder until you're back in the groove. I seem to remember the rebuy cost for the Anaconda is pretty hefty, if you break it
I stopped playing when the VR headset moved downstairs to a bigger standing play area but no good for sit down games.

Bounty hunting in asteroid belts was always my favourite pastime in the game, VR just seemed to make that utterly immersive. My old Rift made it a real squint to read text though, and that is hugely improved in the Quest 2 where everything is quite easy to read.

I didn't go out in the Anaconda, you are right that even in its mining config they are pretty expensive to lose. I swapped it for a high spec Hauler that I had at the same station, and used that to fly out to where I had a Python which whilst not cheap is comparatively affordable if I broke it. Did a couple of missions no problem, once I found the joystick button combination to retract landing gear

Might fly that back to whereever I left the Krait, and go do some asteroid belts now I'm getting some muscle memory back.

I suppose the only option other than going in to a teenage boy's bedroom was to guess what it looks like. I'd say they made the right choice

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

Picked up a Lenovo Explorer headset (no controllers) just to test out whether it's for me. Spent most of my time just sat in my chair in the hangar in Elite Dangerous just looking around.

Damn that ship feels big now.

I really should remind myself of my hotas setup and actually venture into space.

Now to just wait an eternity for reverb g2 to come back in stock, I think this is definitely for me
Grab that. Get that. Check it out. Bring that here. Grab anything useful. Take anything good.

And you can see the floor, my point is I doubt it's worth any Marketeer's salary to venture in to a sweaty teenagers bedroom just for a product pic, goodle images "bedroom stock photo" and plonk your stolen artwork on with a dodgy copy of photoshop.

Job done, sense of smell intact.

Back on to the subject of Vee'are - I've been playing Form on steam - lovely game, tried Budget Cuts but don't like the movement, and Blaston on Quest - surprisingly fun PvP. They had Rez infinite on sale yesterday but I forgot to get it, might have been fun.

We found the kittens video, pretty sure it's from Carole Baskin's charity, which annoyed the wife as she quite likes Joe Exotic. I enjoyed it though.

Re: Do you have any interest in VR?

So I came back to pc gaming from being an xbox user after getting well and truly hooked on elite dangerous and the desire to play it in VR. Have yet to get a VR headset or set elite up on the pc.
What would be a good headset to try?

IIRC not an oculus model unless you want to sign into fb everytime you use it.

Any headset with inside out tracking would do you well but I would steer clear from the Oculus, good headset but you need to sign in with your facebook account to use it, which I guess is ok if you have Facebook but many don't

I already had a Facebook account, but then I am old (so the kids keep telling me). It doesn't force me to actually *use* Facebook, and I'm sure they are tracking me anyway (though I draw the line at having the app on my phone).

So if you think you can have a Facebook account without it taking over your life with it's nasty nagging ways, the Oculus Quest 2 is a pretty nice device, for £300 and the cost of a USB C cable. If you want to do roomscale VR, then the official 5m cable looks quite nice but it uses fibre optics for data transfer so hence the £90 price tag. There are ways to do wireless tethering, but I haven't tried that yet. I use one linked earlier, a 4m one off Amazon.

I already have a birthday reminder account 😜 what are the screens like in the quest 2? Am I likely to see pixels? A friend has a psvr and the screens are terrible and trying to play gt made me instantly nauseated.

I think as far as current headsets go, the Quest 2 isin the higher resolution category. Compared to a PSVR they are much sharper, with a higher refresh rate. You could probably say you could see the pixels if you were looking hard enough, depends how good your eyes are. In any case they'd be much less noticeable. In my honest opinion, they aren't as super crisp as I was expecting from all the reviews, but I think part of that is the games I was playing - Alyx looks fantastic.

I found GT and Wipeout on PSVR gave me no nausea at all, there are some titles that do it on the Quest, I found Google maps outside of "comfort mode" was hard going after 10-15 mins and games that try to simulate "walking" can still get you (Example I found was Abode 2, the "locomotion" movement was stomach churning, but the teleport method was fine). With hardware improvements and software tricks the nauseating effect is gradually being reduced.

With regards to the Facebook integration, you don't notice it. I had a FB account for my old job, completely locked down with minimal personal information. Linked to Oculus fine, and then locked down all their permissions as well. They can data mine that all they want, they won't get anything of value. It's a minor inconvenience and I think all the privacy nuts are blowing it out of proportion slightly. You get a very good bit of kit at a VERY good price.

The Rift S I recently picked up doesn't force me to use Facebook. During setup I was able to continue using my Oculus account from years ago when I had a CV1. Admittedly that option might not be available to new Oculus users though.

Worst case, couldn't one just set up a FB account using a throwaway email address, and use that for Oculus VR shizzle?
