    Valheim

Started recently playing this with some friends - its an utterly awesome and atmospheric game. Even now comes with a Vulkan option, which makes the game run much better!

    Anyone else playing it??

Never heard of it to be honest, will take a look, on Steam? Can you play single player or is it multiplayer only?

    Re: Valheim

I've heard a lot about this recently from streamers on Twitch. Apparently it's fun to play, but since I don't play any multi-player games, will probably find this boring. It's definitely not fun to watch!
Edit: Also it's Early Access... since getting Mount & Blade II: Bannerlords on EA, I've given up on early access games.

I was trying out the free weekend on another supposedly "fun" game, Deep Rock Galactic. Playing single player... it's boring. Guess with friends it's fun...

Main reason I don't do multi-player these days is the kids, get distracted often...

I forgot to add a link to the game:
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/892970/Valheim/

Its mostly procedurely generated and under 1GB in size.

Within a few weeks it has racked millions of sales, and they are increasing at a somewhat mental rate:
    https://www.pcgamer.com/valheim-has-...illion-copies/

It's early access, which I usually avoid but it really is polished for one, especially for a game made by 5 people. Many AAA games would actually release in this state or worse! It's very relaxing to play and easy to dip in and out off. It is incredibly atmospheric.

You can play it as single player,or setup your own server with mates. It's also survival but in the most softest way possible, and for me the best balance I have seen so far.

    Re: Valheim

Started playing last week, already have raked in a lots of hours, very chill until you leave the meadows biome, then it gets eerie. Map is quite large, would recommend a second world (since you can transfer characters with items) with a known trader location if you haven't already found him.

Same, I grabbed it on a recommendation to play with same mates and honestly it's a boring grind to me. Combat is clunky, building is clunkier. It's not a terrible game, but it's not for me.

Having said that, I'll probably have another crack at it at some point, try in singleplayer.

    Re: Valheim

You know, a lot of hyped games seem to do that to me as well. I suppose that's the problem with hype, your expectations are raised way beyond what the game is capable of delivering. On the other hand, some not hyped games have impressed me in the past.

    Re: Valheim

The "hype" for this game is sort of the opposite of other games. Nobody knew about it until some reviewers noticed it was getting something like a few 1000 mostly positive reviews on Steam. There wasn't even much advertising of the game. So it picqued some reviewers interests who then jumped onto the "bandwagon".

It's going to have grind,as it does involve resource management and getting materials to build, which is about par for many survival type games. However, many survival type games are much more grinder as there are far more severe resource re-use limitations, and you need to eat and drink every 5 seconds. Something like ARK for example is much more grindier IMHO. So if you don't like survival type games, and having to juggle resource management it won't be for you(grind is pretty much a part of it). A good part of the game for me and my friends is planning trips to look for resources and then juggling the risks and rewards of going elsewhere if there are potentially more abundant resources.

I found some of the best moments was getting a boat built and having to sale another island to get materials, etc and then hoping when we entered the open ocean,we wouldn't get attack by sea monsters!!

It also means you have to play more tactifully and cautious if you are long way from a spawn point, because if you do loose gear it actually has an effect. So there has been many a time, stuck halfway in the forest,we decided to leg it when the sun started setting and you could see a lot of the wildlife walking towards you!

    Re: Valheim

I don't think it is that bad. But then again it's dependent on what kind of games you like. For example W3 is an excellent game, but couldn't get into it either and I like RPGs. Valheim isn't grindy compared to a number of survival games, but then is grindy compared to exploration games. Its also more Norse based mythology so might not do anything if you like sci-fi which ARK is(and a great soundtrack too).

But then I got bored of ARK too,as it was way too grindy - this seems rather more laid back, and ARK was hyped beyond anything. But it was the one game I ended up refunding because it was such a buggy mess, and rebuying nearly 2 years later when they finally got performance upto speed. I was very patient with that one. I will see how far this one has my attention for also, especially WRT to end game content.

OTH,least I got to ride a Moose around the map in ARK which was one of the most epic things I have done in a survival game. I wish Valheim had rideable Moose. Its dissapointing you can't domesticate animals as mounts yet.

    Re: Valheim

One of my mates wanted to try Valheim, I was pretty skeptical as to whether I'd like it so I got it expecting there was a good chance I would be refunding it through steam after trying. Turns out I quite enjoyed it and have played it for 27 hours now. It's really quite a chilled out game (for the most part) and it's rather pretty in its art style. I do find it can be fairly laborious to do anything in it though, we've only gotten through a couple of bosses so far. Still early days but pretty decent indeed considering it's early access.

    Re: Valheim

I gave in and bought this the other day - really struggling to get into it though. It feels like Minecraft with Vikings - thats cool and all, but the lack of an objective, of a story, of a clear directive doesn't do it for me.

I know there is an overall objective of sorts to follow (as with minecraft), but it just doesn't do it for me, yet. I've built a nice big house, made some weapons etc, killed a few monsters and now I think i'm kinda done with it.

    Re: Valheim

It's only in early access and one of the main objectives to defeat the first 5 bosses,in 5 of the developed biomes. There are two more semi-developed biomes and two unreleased ones. To be able to defeat each boss you need to be able to go from one age of materials to another. So wood/leather to bronze to iron to silver to black metal, etc.

Each boss you defeat unlocks new powers, and new materials and areas:
    https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/valheim-boss-fights-guide/

So you need to defeat each boss to unlock newer things in the game. However, each boss can spawn in a number of locations,so you need to find the monoliths which tell you were the nearest location is(unless you cheat a bit and use the online seed map).

There are also going to be some updates coming this year:
