Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

I used love FPS Half life and Half life 2 call of duty modern warfare, original crisis. Today when I watch people play players unknown or overwatch battlefield 1..I just think nah I'll get creamed I don't have the reactions. I play much slower paced games RPG and Indie games and don't bother with multilayer at all now. Do people have similar experiences? Couple of fav's for me are last of us and firewatch and dumped way to much time into some paradox titles!

Crysis still plays much better than most of these newer FPS games though.

Definitely. I would say more that I'm quite bored of FPSs in general - I find them very one-dimensional and need both good storyline on the campaign and some form of innovative MP that takes the focus away from being 10 years old and just having excellent reactions and fast aim - the last of us fits the bill on both scores.

I still love Civ 3 and sudoku.

Yeah - I play a lot more indie titles now, I hardly ever buy AAA titles now (and never at launch) and I've ditched online mp gaming completely.

I still enjoy FPS games but not online anymore, finding my reaction times aren't what they were.

Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

I played online fps from the early days of adsl, think the first one I got in to was Rainbow 6 Rogue Spear (1998), quickly followed by Day of Defeat beta(pre source so around 2001). I still play the occasional round of DoD with friends. Currently playing PUBG more often than any other game, the band of reprobates I game with are all late 30s to early 40s.

I also played space combat and trading games, mostly Wing Commander and Elite (Amiga), the successors of which I currently play.

Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

    good question - great question.

Yes my play choice has utterly changed. I used to be happy to play through games that were only part original, and similar to previous ones, but now.. I literally cant be bothered and won't even attempt them.

I used to always want games with offline content, and only venture online when I felt competent.
Now I'm only really interested in online competition, no matter how pants I am at the game.

Games with quests interlocking now tire me to tears. Go see farmer A to get item 1, go back to person B to drop off item 1 and collect item 2 which Fisherman C needs..... cant be arsed. Not interested.
Used to love that... used to get a real kick out of completing them. Not any more. They bore me to death.

I used to like open scenarios, with no linearity. Now I really quite like being funelled down a single track, with little chance to stray.

There's a few exceptions- Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor was quite open and I loved it. But I realyl enjyed the unending combat when I wanted it.. and the ability to run off and go stealthy. That's a rare game I think. It did have the quests I hate, but somehow it got into my blood. Few others have.

I like to perfect things now. I used to be happy to clear a level. I now really want it platinum.

I know love...utterly love... turret defence games. This is mainly because Ferral hates them and gifts them to me and once I'd played Sol Survivor, I was in love. 15 years ago... I'd not have played that in preference to a new CoD... but now .. no competition. I love my turret defence perfectioning.

I have learned to love Indies. Mark of the Ninja is a great example. It covers the desire to perfect, and to retry over and over. And it's simple. But maaaaaan it's tough too.

Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

I think newer FPS games are not as good as old ones, especially when I revisit older games like UT3,UT1 or even Crysis. Hence,I seem to have gotten more and more bored of them - the only serious one which I seem to keep playing is Planetside 2,and I play Overwatch(and in the past TF2) since it has good humour. Doom was not too bad,but for me still missed something(not sure what it is),but was certainly better than many of the newer ones. In fact the last proper single player FPS game I really enjoyed was Bioshock:Infinite and I loved the characters and the story in that one!

However,I have gotten more into open world RPG and exploration games and some of the fantasy games as I got older, whereas I could never really get into WoW,I found Diablo 3 and HOTS actually fun to play with my mates.

    Not really.
Games have changed, though... I used to while away the hours playing Bomb Jack, River Raid and all manner of stuff like that. I even completed Afterburner at the arcade in one sitting.
When the world changed and we got PCs, I played Doom, Thief, Baldur's Gate...

Then Multiplayer games came along, but was instantly ruined by people bending the game rules in order to spam, gank and generally do things that would get them fired, arrested or beaten up in real life. I don't mind bending the rules so long as it doesn't impact someone else's game - Manners and common courtesy should still apply. But I think that mentality is what paved the way for the Pay-To-Win 'anything to get that advantage over the other players' attitude...

I still love space games and am as much a fan of Elite now as I was Freelancer, Starlancer and even the likes of Star Raiders. Third person adventure games (Mass Effect (not the new one), Tomb Raider (not the new ones)) are like the evolution of all those isometric and top-down or side-scroller games I used to play, especially the game of the movie (Predator, Aliens, BTTF, even Moonwalker. I had 'em all!).

We are legion! I love tower defence games, although I do like them mixed with other genres to spice things up.
    Sanctum(2) for FPS/TD
Dungeon Defenders, Deathtrap and Defender's Quest for RPG/TD.
    Creeper World III - RTS/TD

My gaming taste hasn't particularly changed though. When I were a lad I spent many hours playing sims (Theme Park/Theme Hospital/SimCity) and Diablo, and recently I've been playing... sims (Cities: Skylines, Planet Coaster, X3: Albion Prelude) and Diablo 3.

Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

As a teenager I played Elite on the BBC Micro. Guess what I play a lot of now
I also played things like "Revs", now replaced by Dirt Rally in VR.
I don't play Civ as much as I used to, but I think turn based strategy still suits me I am just scared of seeing the clock suddenly warp to "where has the weekend gone".

I think that is a "no", my tastes haven't really changed. There are games now that were impossible when I was younger but I'm sure a young me would have liked them as much as old me does now had they been around.

Re: Has your gaming taste changed as you've got older?

Largely..no they have not changed so much - when I really got heavily into gaming it was all about Half life and then TFC & original Counter Strike beta 0.4 up until they ruined things with 1.0..and then again when they recovered with CS Source. I'd be about 16-18 then, and that was the point when multiplayer gaming really got me hooked. I ran our clan server (and we even tried it here @ Hexus once ) and we had stats, which gave you a ranking and kept things competitive over multiple matches, and that formula has had me hooked ever since. I was also really into RTS games - the Westwood generation of C&C games, Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Warcraft 2, startopia...plus all their clones/similar games and they were mostly what I played offline.

I was firmly into WoW for a good 6 years of my life, and largely took a break from "serious" gaming after that for a couple of years..playing console games and rediscovering the joy of a good single player game with the Tomb Raider reboots & various other console games.

At the moment i'm hooked on Hearthstone, Overwatch & PUBG and again, a lot of the appeal is the competition and ranking that comes with it - that persistence makes a difference and keeps me coming back.

I've played almost all genres over the years, with the only one not really getting me is sports games (fifa etc) as I just can't stand them. I wouldn't say my tastes have changed at all really; what has changed is that I have more money to spend on games so I typically have way more than I ever did growing up, but I have far less time to play Like many people i have over 200 on my steam account (thanks mostly to humble bundle) and maybe 10% have been completed - whereas in my youth i'd buy one game and play it until it was done, as it would be a month or two til I could afford another.
