Angry Can I disable steam updates?

So I've got HL2. I don't play it that often - maybe half an hour once a week. So every ruddy time I go to play I get a crapload of stupid steam updates to wait for. Is there any way of disabling it - I don't play online and don't see why I should have to wait for a zillion updates to deathmatch or the steam engine.

    Grrr....

Just disconnect from the internet and steam will load up in offline mode, or use your firewall to block all the connections coming in/out from steam.

It's in the options for the game. Go to "my games", right click > properties > change whatever options there.

That's all from memory, but I think it's correct.

    goto "play games"
right click all the games one by one
    goto properties
and change "always keep updated" to "dont keep updated"

Offline thing doesnt actually work on my HL2, same has happened to my bro. If you select offline play in the options on steam when you start HL2 it should just go but it says you have to be connected to steam to play.

Will try the settings thing - didn't know you had a right-clicky menu game by game.

If I firewall valve it just hangs- I know this as I had to exception valve in protowall while back.

    Thanks guys.

offline mode DOES work, if and only if the game is marked as 100% updated.

i played through hl2 on gf's dial-up machine by copying the gcf's from home over dvd, logging into steam once to set a cached login, and playing offline subsequently
