    Online Gaming-should i disable A/V & FW?

    Hi
My online games (CS & Farcry) seem to lag quite a bit even though i have 2mb BB(Aol via usb Modem). Would it be wise to disable my Norton AV also my Kerio FW (free)? And is there any other tips to fasten my online Gaming expereince?

    Apreciate your help!

    AOL is your problem tbh...

no seriously, head over to www.adslguide.org or www.bandwidthplace.com and check that first. Your FW and AV should have little or no impact unless you are running a truely pap Pc, and I see your spec looks ok so I doubt its that.

in CS go into console and type net graph 3, should tell you if its your connection thats the issue or if its just your PC groaning under the strain.

Super bad idea disabling FW and AV during online gaming (or any other time you are online for that matter). You get a lot of script kiddies who will scan your ports as you are gaming and dump all sorts of nasties onto your PC.

Changing to useing a router instead of your crapy supplied modem would help. There all crap. Trust me.

Im going to AOL been the problem as well. The lag might be due to your computer, what settings for what games? Seen as its a mesh it could be infested. Mine came from the factory full of spyware.

I agree best plan is to dump the USB modem get a router, then you wont need a software firewall.

Ive used norton before, but I feel it does seem to slow down the machine quite a lot, but I would not disable it at all. Wow...don't reach for that disable button!! Like somebody else said, use a hardware firewall built into a router if you can.

I've tried playing online games (UT2004), and I had to disable Norton to get it to even run properly...

    EDIT: Not on my pc.

I use Mcaffe and its fine, Kerio on my old PC, and thats fine. And i ahve the nForce 4 Firewall and Mcaffe on my pc and thats fine. Get the configurtaion sorted out. Dont give up and turn them off. Yes they do use alot of resource but with a windows pc thats something you jsut need to put up with.

Yeh ithink your right! I am thinking of getting rid of Norton AV and may instal AVG free as its a lot less cpu intensive!
Example what happens in game; I shoot and get lag! I just checked my Latency in the game and its 35 but has been known to rise to about 100 also done a speed test and thats seems ok (1748)! Any ideas?

I don't know if this may help! I have a 6800le which has all pipes opened up (Rivatuner) but apart from that i have not done any other changes, the card is on all its default settings! Should i adjust it? ......And
My Bios firmware is pretty old as i have not updated it since PC was new (2yrs) ..Would that help?

Close EVERYTHING down in Windows except your AV and Firewall. I'd even recommend shutting your AV and firewall down too, if you don't mind your computer being at risk.
I play a lot of CS, and I find I get all sorts of nasty lag if I'm running stuff in the background. MSN is the worst for it.
Also, USB modems eat up loads of system resources, so if you're using one of those, don't. Only problem is, if you're with AOL, you don't really have a say in the matter.
I'd recommend getting a different ISP and a router.

That's all I can think of really.

    HTH,
    Russ.
