    Running A Server

    Hi everybody

Right i am running an Americas Army server from my laptop
    Compaq Evo N1000V
    P4 2.0GHZ
    512mb PC2100
    20 GB HDD
    Win XP Pro
I seem to be suffering from some lag issues but it is not internet lagg it is pc lagg (If these are the right words)
As i am on my server about every 10-15 seconds i get a stutter
I have done all i can think of increased the page file let windows manage the page file got all the latest drivers (As far as i know)
    It is driving me mad
Does anybody have any idea's as to what it could be???
This is the first pentium system i have ever had and am unsure of any common faults/probs (If any) that may cause the above fault
Also on a quick note what would be the best operating system for me to run for this server
I have win 95/98/2000 and win xp

Thanks for you time and help

linux would probably be your better bet, although more ram would help you out for less pc lag.

that PC aint good enough if its running on XP

You really need to be running a linux varient (reccomend slackware or debian for a gaming server), and you also need more ram than that really (1gig minimum)

The Chip is a bit slow too, but you cant really change that

Why is the cpu hardly used ??
And why only use 250(ish) mb of mem ???

You could probs buy a second hand pc of ebay and stick a bit of extra ram in it. Install of linux and your servering!

Im guessing that other people are conecting to the server via the net, and your conecting via lan. Ive made UT2k4 servers on my old pc, will host Network games fine but only about 4-5 internet player before it starts to lag.

That process manager isnt accurate enough really, just trust us that it will work much much better on linux....windows XP isnt a good environment for a gameing server

with a laptop it coudl well be disk paging thats your killer.

Laptop hard drives are not renowned for performance. everytime the page file is used , it will slow things down a little.

not if its disk queue length.

go to start -> run and type in perfmon.msc

look for the Avg Disk Queu length peaking over 1

It is not internet lagg i can go on the server on my own and get this stutter and the ping is not altering

Right a slight update ran the server tonight and it all went without any probs the odd jitter here and there but on the main it was excellent
    The hdd is only a 4200rpm would i benefit from a 5400 one ???
I may buy more mem if i can be persuaded this maybe spme of the fault
But tonight it all ran great had about 10 players and no lagg at all

Might of been a glitch, are you running the latest virsion of the server console?

I've not run game servers , but I do host a number of heavy useage servers professionally. What I've found is that CPU spee is pretty academic for most things. For good "server " capacity , you need 2 things. Fast drive access and as much memory as you can fit

this is why "real" servers run on SCSI drives

If I was to build a budget game server ( ie with no redunancy as its not really mission critical ) it would ideally be SCSI or at least fast S-ATA

I surpose it depends on what game and how maney people. If you jsut running on for you and one or two mates then SCSI drives might be a bit OTT>.

true , if you have enough memory. It would depend on the game - BF1942 used to need shedloads of memory for the server due to the map size.

Memory is the cheaper upgrade in most cases and would most likely make the biggest difference

besides , over specced solutions dont run slow
