    Disappointing FPS STILL in CS...

    Hi all

    Current system specs:

    Processor:P3 @ 1 Ghz
    RAM:384Mb RAM
    Graphics:Geforce 4 ti4200
    Sound:Soundblaster 128 PCI

Since installing STEAM on my PC my FPS has been fluctuating really badly between 10 (extreme cases) and 85 (when at best.) It is more constant at the higher rate but will not remain there for long periods of time. I was first told to install the refresh fix from HERE and enter fps_max 101 into my console. This appears to have helped a bit but the large fall and rise in my frames is not really useful especially when there is a lot of action 'on-screen.'

What else can i do??!! On my old gfx card (geforce 2 MX) CS stayed constant at 60 always; but on my new card it dosn't know what it wants...would running it in D3D help?

I need some advice here, its getting on my nerves!

    Wilko

do you have the latest nvidia drivers.. and do you have anti aliasing on? cos i find that the hl engine doesnt seem to like AA (especially on my gf2 card that i had... quincunx is ok with my gf4, but i run it in 1600x1200 so theres no need for fsaa ). just a thought...

also i take it other games run fine - eg its not something running in the background using the harddrive or system resources...

I ran the RTCW Demo and that seems to run really nice. I got a 3D Mark 03 score of 1082 and a 3D mark 01 SE score of 3600.

AA is set to off and i run CS at 1024 x 768

that 3dmark2001 score seems really low to me... could be the p3 slowing it down, but most people get 10k+ with a gf4 ti4200.. i mean i get 3000 with a geforce2mx...

oh and in halflife, make sure that you are in OpenGL mode (in settings, video modes) otherwise it'll be running in software mode which looks pants and runs slowly.

V-Sync causes tearing on this new gfx card so i don't put it on - also it has minimal effect on my frame rate.

I thought that score was low as well I think the gfx card may be installed with AGP 2X applied, i can't seem to unlock the 4X feature which i have been told my motherboard 'supports.'

CS is in OpenGL mode, AA is now set to off and performance is set to maximum rather than quality. Still know real effect!

I have just ran 3D Mark 01 SE again in D3D Hardware with these new changes:

Colour settings changed to 16-Bit from 32-Bit

    AA set to OFF

Hardware setting changed from 'Quality' to 'Performance'

I just clocked a score of 5370 Much more pleasing...

Yeh mate but you use a Rad 9800 pro dont you? I have a GF4 Ti4200 and it gets between 70-100 depending how many on the screen and on which map. I used to love this game, and play it constantly, but since steam and 1.6 has come out ive actually started to hate the game and have no quit cs.

Basically steam takes alot of resources up, thats why in game you get lag bursts, fps drops etc due to the GUI interface that steam uses and the amount of bandwith.

    cl_weather 0

Turns the rain off in Azzy and gives a huge fps boost.

Other FPS issues are due to the new high poly models (Galil, shield, FAMAS etc). Get a bigger gfx card and CPU.

I'm struggling as well mate so you aint alone.
