Can i resell my retail HL2 Game? & has the CE vers got any extras?

    Hi

I purchased HL2 (Retail cd vers) about 1 month ago and i register the game on Steam. But i purchased a Collectors edition (Tin Box, DVD vers) of the game last week and was hoping to resell the first game on ebay! But i'm sure i've read somewhere that i cannot resell as the key will not be valid to someone else! Is this true?
Also is there any other extras on the CE Box that aint on the retail?

    Cheers in advance!!

No, you can't sell HL2. Unless you give the buyer your steam account too, which is against Valve's rules and they can/will disable the account.

I for one shall never be buying another valve game that restricts you this way. It is very unfair and they should allow you to de-register a CD key. There is no reason for it other than pure greed on thier part - everyone has to buy a brand new copy. I like trading games, it's one of the fun parts of gaming and lets people get a bargin who can't afford a brand new copy. It has nothing to do with piracy what-so-ever. They still over-charge anyway and even the fully downloaded version was a rip off IMO.

    Ditto

I always take my old games down the local computer exchange, they give me money for them once I play them no more, plus I can trade them for other games

I hate the fact that you pay 30 quid for a game and are stuck with it, whether you like it or not, its ridiculous. If I could play it, complete it, and then be able to get another game instead for a few quid ontop, I think its much better, you get more for your money, and makes other people happier, as they get to play the game you originally bought at a knock down price.

I, for one hate valve for doing this, its just money grabbing, its not like it stopped piracy, you can get plenty of cracked versions of half life 2 on the net, and if you wanted to play CS Source, Im sure you could downloaded a cracked server letting you play that too. I bought the game, but I wish I hadnt, 30 quid spent, when I could have bought another game for 30, then traded it for another game... then another, and maybe played 5 decent games for my 30 quid.

To do this you have to pay them $15 and send you disk to an address in the states.

    $15 + postage?

You might as well buy it again to be fair, plus sending it to the states? Why even bother, knowing them theyll put a value of $50 the full retail RRP when they send it back, and youll get done by customs too

Best bet is to sell it to a mate and tell him to keep shh over the whole account malarkey

Ok..So whats stopping me changing all my Personal stuff to something basic and then selling it on ebay, but letting the prospective buyer know the 'coo'? I could mention this in the Ad and send a email with the changed personal details once the Auctions ended! I know i will lose 60% of buyers but its better than nothing!
Or is it Steam know the ip address of every PC thats registered! I doubt that very much! If i sell it on ebay you can bet you get some 'Goody Goody' Wanting to grass to Eula!

You probably will get some goody goody wanting to grass you up cos they paid 30 quid, and they wont like the fact someones getting it for probably 15 or so quid..

I think its just linked by email and password to ur steam account, you should be allowed changing IP addresses, how do 56k play? Slowly, but there IP changes each time they connect, and there will be some people trying to play on 56k, there always is

I do the same as you Swafeman, play a game through and if I'm not going to play it again I go trade it in towards something else. I recently traded in Farcry and a few older games and picked up Splinter Cell Chaos Theory in place and also got a credit note back.

With Half Life 2 now I have completed it I probably wont play through it again in a good while, yeah it was good but nothing to really get me to play through it again in the near future and I'm not overly interested in Counter Strike so here I am stuck with it just gathering dust due to the CD Key being locked on my Steam account now.

With this I'm boycotting Valve and their future releases wether I really want them or not. I will most likely not buy the addon they are releasing for HL2 even though I quite like the sound of it. Its the principle of the whole thing, you should be allowed to deactivate you're key without having to pay any extra so you can sell it on to someone else for their enjoyment.

You could unregister the cd key, which you can use an another account, but it expires within 90 days. Once that times up you've lost your game forever, unless if you register it within that time.

hmm i dont really like the idea of trading games...its like reading a book then taking it back to the shop because you've read it... Valve have every right to do as they have, I would do the same if I was them. They are a business, and need to make money, same as any other. If stopping reselling helps them to do that then so be it, they will do it

Q: Help, I've just bought Half-Life 2 from the shops, and when I try to register the CD Key, it says it's already in use! What can I do?

A: You can get in contact with VU games, following the link: http://support2.vugames.com/hl2/answer.aspx?ID=7250

You basically will have to prove to them that you are the rightful owner of the CD key, using pictures. They will then send you out a new CD key for you.
Then surely you could sell your copy and they could contact VU and say "ITS NOT WORKING" and send them piccy's ?

I disagree. Selling something on to someone, who maybe can't afford a new full price, is not like taking back to the shop for a full refund. There is nothing wrong with that unless use sell it as brand new and not second hand.
