    CSS-Need tips on clans etc!

    Hi

I recently got the HL2 game and have been addicted playing CSS ever since! Although my Kill rate is not that good (1-2) i Now want to join a clan but as i am not that understanding on online games i am wondering how to go about it! so can you please help me here?
    1. Do i need to change any settings in my FW ? (kerio free)
    2. Do i need a certain Router? (at the moment i have a SAMR 4110)
    3. Do i need to be really good?
    4.Can i get Hacked/Viruses playing on a clan?
    5. Do i need a high Bandwidth? (@ present 2MB-AOL )
6.Do i need to have any background progs turned off?
    7. What processes can i disable to avoid sloww gaming?

I think thats it but if you can add anything else i'd be gratefull!

Those questions seem to be "i want to set up my own server" questions not "i want my to join a clan questions".

First, theres no chance of you being able to run your own server off your pc without it being painfully laggy, if you want a server, rent 1.

Setting up a clan is easy, get to know some people and group up, theres always people of your level around.

If you want any tips theres always #hexus.cs on quakenet

I don't know how the HL2 tin thing works (how many disks are included etc).

I'm assuming, you'd get 1 disk that is exactly the same as a normal HL2 disk, and a few extras. Assuming you've not installed the HL2 disk from the tin (it's not registered on a steam account yet), then can't you just swap both HL2 disks, so you'd keep your already registered disk in the tin, and sell the unregistered one as never played, and brand new.

Wouldn't that work - assuming all the assumptions are correct .

    Think of it this way:

A clan is a group of people (a team for example) that play matches against other clans. It's just like a football team, or anyotther sport. I'd answer all of your questions as "no", except maybe number 3. Being good helps, but for some clans it's not REALLY important. I would definatly say I'm NOT good, yet I'm in the hexus clan.

Most clans will have a set of requirements - usually a trial before you can join.

I'm a member of the hexus clan. If you want to join, go to IRC Quakenet #hexus.cs, and ask there.

You'll need to be a member of these forums (which you are), and you need to play a trial.

If you just idel on that IRC channel for a while, someone (usually in the evening), will say "who want to play CS?". If you just go off and play with the rest of the clan, you'll see how it works and get more practise without actually being in the clan.

    Sound advice there lads

Its all about having fun as well. There no point making or joining a clan when you have issues with the individuals or don't see eye-to-eye on everything with a few members.

As for clans - I've played for a few inc Hexus and tbh I've never had any issue with ANY member or play thats been in all the clans and the newest one I'm in [NFF] went to a LAN recently where the funniest incident EVER occurred between Muppet and DIS where they bickered like old women over a small mistake. This proceeded to make me laugh so much I nearly pee'd myself 1/2 way through a clan match

    Within 30 secs - they we're kissing and hugging again after they both pummelled the opposition... such is life Anyway I'll answer your questions now ;

    1. Do i need to change any settings in my FW ? (kerio free)

The following ports must be open in your firewall and router for Steam and Steam Games to work:

UDP 1200 (used for friends service)
    UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
    TCP 27020 to 27039 inclusive
TCP 27040 and 27041 only for CyberCafe Owners

Computers running Dedicated Servers need these ports open:

UDP: 27015 and 27020 (default HLDS, SRCDS and HLTV port)
    TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

    2. Do i need a certain Router? (at the moment i have a SAMR 4110)
Nope - most routers can handle CS and Steam fine

    3. Do i need to be really good?
Hell no - theres clans out there that advertise for "rubbish" players. Its more the social and fun aspect over winning really

    4.Can i get Hacked/Viruses playing on a clan?
Not unless you have no protection and open emails with dodgy named attachments

    5. Do i need a high Bandwidth? (@ present 2MB-AOL )
That would be fine, its not "bandwidth" you really need its more "routing" really. Basically this is the route from 1 point to another the data takes over the internet when connecting to servers. If you can "tracert" to a server IP address, the number of steps taken are called hops. The lower the hops the better the connection will be and the data has less chance of being recieved in the wrong order.

6.Do i need to have any background progs turned off?
Too be the best - you need the best performance out of your system so close ANY CPU intensive programs that maybe running such as "crunching applications"

    7. What processes can i disable to avoid sloww gaming?

Crunching Applications, any P2P downloaders or anything that uses CPU or downloads

If you run any p2p software (for legal uses naturally) drop the allowed bandwidth to the lowest you can...
