how old is old? Is it still under warrenty? It sounds to me like a laser alignment problem, or a laser power issue (ie it is getting too weak). Best bet is to give it a clean (with a dry none scratching duster). Or if you are feeling brave take it apart and adjust the potentiometer to increase the laser's power - I assume the Xbox has one - that might fix it...ofc it will void and warrenty that is left if you open the case.

Other than that try giving microsoft a call, they normally have VERY good tech support (even if their software can maybe be called, 'dodgy' )

3rd option is to accept that its broken, and stick with your PC, you will have a much happier life (or buy another one if you can't bare to be without it)

That used to happen with PS2's didn't it? The blue disc error thing... I haven't heard about it happening to Xboxs.

If its a phillips or thompson DVD drive then these are more prone to failing, getting read errors and misaligning than the samsung DVD drives that are used in some of the xboxes.

I had to replace my old Xbox's drive with a samsung and it worked fine ever since

I don't know at all Sorry - a friend got the drive and fitted it for me

The model thats stated to work 100% with xboxes is the Samsung SDG-605 DVD-ROM.

    Hope this helps

it's more than likely your dvd drive packing up - they are not standard dvd drives either. you can probably get a 2nd hand drive for around £30, but you'll need to open your xbox, and you'll need those torx type screwdrivers to do that

    check this place out: http://llamma.com/xbox/
