Online Multiplayer Games Stutter every 3 minutes or so.

I'm guessing this post belongs here, I can download stuff fine, its just when playing online games.


Hello, I have just downloaded Battlefield 2 and as with all my other games it kinda stops for around 5 seconds every 3 minutes or so. It just stops, like the internet connection has dropped for 3-5 seconds and then I can play again, it really is annoying.

Anyway, I have a wireless network running, my Router is a Belkin 7630, 54G etc.

It is linking to my only computer which is a desktop via a Belkin 54G USB receiver, the signal is "Very Good" as quoted by Windows.

I can download huge files such as Battlefield 2 fine at around 55kbs a second.

My line is 512 Download and 256 Upload and the ISP is AOL (Don't burn me).


The rest of the computer is:

3800+ Venice Core
6800GT MSI 256mb
1GB PC3200 RAM
Audigy 2
MSI Neo 2 Platinum



I don't think it is overheating as I can run any single player game maxed out so I think it is the internet connection.

When I run a direct LAN cable from the Router to the PC there is non of this stuttering rubbish so its only with a wireless network.

Can anyone help out?

i run the same connection on ntl and never have problems with lag...


or was the aol the point you were making?

Hello, it is not the 512 line it is something to do with the wireless stuff.

I can run a wire from the router to the PC and have non of the stuttering atall.

Even on simpler game such As SOF2 it still happens, its something to do with the wireless network.

Anyone?

If its only happening when using the wireless then this points to a problem with either the wireless dropping due to interference (microwaves in the area?, any more wireless networks in neighbours houses ?), or an issue with the equipment itself ( Not been twisting the antenna round have you as this can break the cable inside and cause the issues you state)

I would try changing channels and check that the network is secure by encrypting the signal and using a passkey to join.

Found my way to these forums after doing a search on lag problems with BF2 and NTL.

I too am experiencing the same issue as the original poster. Every few minutes my game will simply stop for between 1 and 3 seconds, then resume, depositing my player/tank/plane 300 yards further on in the direction of travel when the game froze.

I realised this was a network issue when I attempted to fraps record the spikes to demonstrate them to a friend. The video displayed flawless play (albeit with me usually flying in a straight line into a building due to the spikes).

I'm on a 3mb NTL cable line going through a Trust router. The game doesn't "lag" in general terms, it simply spikes every few minutes. The higher my ping to a server, the more it spikes, the lower my ping the less it spikes. I've tried opening up every port known to man, DMZ, you name it, nothing changes.

Switch over to a 512k BT Basic ADSL line I have and the game runs smoother than a baby's bottom.

I am not using any form of wireless for my connection. There are other computers in the house on Wireless, and the router is broadcasting Wireless, but I myself am hardwired directly from PC to router.

I've got a feeling is is packet loss... but I can't remember how I fixed it when I suffered the same problems with my Belkin router...

I'll flag this one up in the networking forum too, see if any off the voodoo doctors in there can help.

Had the same issues on a gig lan setup so it looks like it could be any numbers of things.

Battlefield 2 really annoys me now as when I'm running on a building, the game stops and I end up around 10 meters further on, usually falling off which is a bit darn annoying, especially with me not knowing how to use a parachute!!

I've heard all these terms like "packet loss" "MTU" etc. etc. but I have no idea what they do, if you do tell me to change one of them the please tell me how to do it.

I too have the same problem with this game, running on a 1mb NTL Cable Connection, with 2 Belkin USB 54g adapters bridging my machine to the internet.

This "freeze" every so often is really starting to annoy me.....so if anyone can help me (and the number of others above) it really would be a great help.

I use a netgear router @ home with a 2mb line. Have switched in the past months from using a wireless to just plain LAN connection, no more lagg, better pings etc and I have barley anything obstructing the router, its about 5M away.

Same for me. I've just gone back to using one of those network cables. My router is only around 5 meters away too.
