That would be one hell of a task trying to shut down all the CS servers, can't see that happening for a few years.
kl glad to here that
It would be a bit stupid at the mo to condisering the profit some of these company's must be making out of it!
World Opponent Network, the system behind the current Half Life multiplayer system, is being closed at an undetermined date in the not-too-distant future. This inclused Couterstrike 1.5.
Steam is replacing WON. Any 100% Steam-written mods are already playable via Steam instead of WON (e.g. Counterstrike 1.6), as are any older mods which just happen to work (e.g. Action Half Life 5.6b can be coerced into working). Mods are being updated to work 100% with Steam (e.g. Action Half Life 1.0)
Any older mods which are not updated to the Steam framework & do not currently work will NO LONGER work.

I heard that once the new one was out our old serials wont work.
Bit unfair really as I have the retial CS.
Hang on... If the won cd keys are being stopped how are you ment to log onto steam ? or am I being very very stupid.
As far as I'm aware, when you input your won CD key into steam, it converts it into some Steam ID..
And Scooby, yours will work with Steam. Also you will be able to play ever other mod as well as the original HL & OPF.
when you load up Steam for the first time, you get a window of all the currently available mods on Steam (OpFor, CS, DoD, etc). click one, it'll prompt you for a CD key to use. Every game currently on Steam can run off the same CD key, and you can re-use any old key you have. For example, all mine are linked to my Counterstrike key from the Generations pack.
The CD key is stored SERVER side, linked to your Steam account. You can't sign up with the same key multiple times, so bear in mind that your Steam account is PERMANENT - don't just assume you can make a new account every week.
When CS:CZ is released in a couple of weeks, you will have the option of buying a CD in stores, or of buying just a CD key online, for a reduced price, then downloading the game through Steam. The same will happen with Half Life 2.
There has been pleanty of misinformation about the payment model - simply put, end users will continue to buy a game once and only once. there is NO end-user monthly fee. the monthy fee rumours apply to a system for Cyber Cafe owners, who can pay a $10 monthy subscription to have unlimited access to every product on steam (i.e. the $10 a month covers every current title & will include HL2 and CSCZ when they come out, with no additional cost).
Any more questions?

Yes, I don't quite understand. You mean to say when HL2 & CS:CZ are released I will have to use seperate CD keys to play them online, eg either use the CD Key that comes with the copy of HL2 & CS:CZ, can't you just use your first and original CD Key im my case the one I got with my single cd "game of the year edition" of HL1
