    Teamspeak setup.

My friends and I play RTS's intermittently and only for fun. I was thinking about setting up teamspeak for us, so a couple of questions really. Are the servers cheap to rent? If so who is good? Can you run a server happily from home? Do I definately need a static IP address? Thanks in advance!

if its only a few of you, just setup teamspeak on your own server and set the codec to a lowish one. If you thinking of over 10 people your best renting a server, go to http://sales.tritoncia.com/hosters.php?l=4 and rent a server from any of the authorised hosters, i wouldent rent of any company that is not listed on that list, they could be shut down at any time, or worse run by a group of 14 year old kids.

We do have a hexus TS server (I think some kind person donated it), but It only has space for 15. If you don't have many friends wanting to use it, it shouldn't be a problem, but it's probably supposed to be hexus only.

It doesn't seem right to steal your server, I will try a test run at home on my compy before I do anything else, although I may take you up on the offer.

Menthel.....its very low overheads on CPU, its just a bit of a drain on bandwidth though

As the guys said, run it on a private server for no profit, and you don't need a licence

    As a side note:
I have purchased a Vigor Draytek 2600 ADSL Router which has port throttling, so the "plan" is to have a seperate PC running a Teamspeak server on a part of my bandwidth for those times that the MA don't have access to one on a public server. This is an attempt at controlling bandwidth to stop timing out on other PC's on the router: Might not work of course

Only need a Static IP for when you boot down the router, reboot and then people wanna use it without you telling them where it is.

It is "easier" just for that reason, but not essential. Its just a case of telling everyone the IP address when you recreate the server each time, OR not rebooting your Router, hence keeping the same IP.

before we got the TS server we are using at the moment me and Trippledence used to host the teamspeak servers on our pc's and that does take up alot of bandwidth when 6-8 people are on it
