Suggestion for a good PC controller

Ok guys wish to use my pc for games - no flight simulators simply strategy and platform games. Need to buy a decent, reasonable price controller -
    any suggestions:

Read a little, not sure whether it would be better to buy a PS2 or xbox controller and link via an adaptor or simply get a dedicated pc one.

    Suggestions please

I use an XFX controller on my PC.

Cracking piece of kit and its survived the abuse I've given it after launching it into the wall after making silly mistakes on FIFA when playing online

I have the Microsoft sidewinder, its ideal for platform type games (I also use it on the emulators I have) but it doesnt have analogue control so not to hot on the driving games. Had it a few years now and its still going strong, stuff has been spilt on it and its been dropped numerous times now !

Had to open it up after the spillage (lager ! ) and give it a clean as buttons were sticking, however its still going strong after that !
