    Quake 4 comming to Linux, it's official..ish

    From NewsForge:
linuX-gamers.net got an offical statemant from id Software's TTimo that Quake4 will be released for Linux too. Rresumably the Linux client will be delayed on or two weeks. Quake4 is the first game from id Software which will use a SDL backend for input and OpenGL.

Maybe a mac version would come out too, since its kinda based on the Doom 3 engine, and that came on the mac. Just an assumption.

Quake4 is ID and ID make most of their games natively workable on nix, so I'd be surprised if Quake4 doen't work on nix. ID and Epic are the pwn when it comes to making stuff that actually works on linux.

This is really great that more and more games are coming to Linux because that's the only thing stopping me from switching to Linux... my gaming addictions.

Actually Epic and ID games have been worked natively on Linux for years, its just most people aren't aware of it. Unfortunately few other companies do this, I believe Blizzard might be one of the few that also does it, but beyond that there aren't any decent games companies which games work natively(out of the box) on a nix machine.

But with Cygnus and WINE improving all the time, hopefully within a few years most of the major names should be playable(albeit at slower FPS) on nix, once that happens people can seriously make the switch.

This is unfortunate. I thought I remembered Baulders Gate being on the list of games that worked natively, I assumed Blizzard would be nix friendly, since if I'm not mistaken it does take quite a bit of work to get something going like that.

Sucks about them not releasing the nix client for WoW though, considering how big a game that is I would have thought it would have been worth it.

aahhr...well, I only looked at the list once, and FPS's were the ones that caught my attention, thanks for clearing that up. Still, its good that games are sometimes being made to work on nix natively. Gives the nix users something to enjoy once in a while
