Oh dear Lord no.... Postal: The Movie

Yep, Uwe Boll is up to his "Hey, let's make a film of this game!" tricks again... This time it's Postal, Running with Scissors' controversial 'shoot 'em up' which, as a game, had very little to recommend it and is competent only in crossing the line between entertainment and bad taste in the guise of entertainment.

Check out the full story in the press release on HEXUS.gaming.

Don't get me started on Jack Thompson. I was going to do some coverage on his latest escapade but given his propensity for theatening to sue people, I thought it best to let others fight that one.

And if anyone reading this is wondering what it's all about, look here. DO abit of digging on Google and the full picture becomes clear.

    Oh dear god NO !!!!!!

    1 word - Drivel.

They think us gamers are going to sit and watch any old crap just because its a game made into a film? I think not somehow really.

They should have left it at street fighter and the rubbish mario film and promised never to convert another game into a film...

Well Said I mean, what games have been made into films now?

Street Fighter - Great game, cr@p film
Mario - Great game, cr@p film
Alien Vs Predator - Great game, cr@p film
Tomb raider(2 movies) - average games, average film
Final Fantasy (2 movies) - poor games, average films
Resident Evil (2 movies) - great games, great films
and now..Doom....(out in the uk soon, already showing in the states)

Probably more but those are the main ones.

What gets me is that they don't ever make the movies of the games. If they did that, it could be good. For example, Tomb Raider - other than casting someone as Lara Croft what relavence was there to the game? Virtually nothing story wise. Mario, same; AvP...well that was totally ruined. Street fighter? pfft

Now if for example with teh new Doom movie, it was actaully doom, ie your a loan marine fighting his way through hell on phobos or something it could be a cool movie, maybe add a bit of character interaction throughougt (maybe add a commander over the radio, and some innocents that you meet on your way through). It wouldnt be amazing viewing but better than totally changing the movies story to the point where it's only got a tenious link to the game.

The exception here is Resident Evil - I loved those films and there were a load of links back to the games throughout. Ofc casting milla as the lead role helped it a bit

The reason they're probably doing this is to extract more cash from the young gamer market.

I for 1 am not going to go to the cinema and pay in excess of 10 pounds once food and beers taken into consideration to watch 90 mins of rubbish, highly glossed with fancy CGI and given a games title where the storyline resembles the weak half-arsed remains of a game.

I mean if doom was an 18 certificate, why the hell dumb it down, remove the gore and hell references and stick an actor that only 13 year old wrestling fans would like into the frame?

You missed alone in the dark from that list mate

Oh what a woeful film... I'd rather gouge my eyes out with rusty spoons and pour hot wax into the recesses than watch Christian Slater in this epic misery of a film EVER again.

Ooo most interesting info in there is this...

"Essentially, Boll is a modern-day director. He's able to secure the investors (mostly German, in Hollywood often derisively referred to as "stupid German money"), secure the rights for cheap, picking games with only moderate brand recognition, does all of the actual production himself, and swiftly cranks out a movie. While under normal circumstances a director's movies could gross so little he's eventually shut out from every operating studio, Boll is exempt because he funds them under a loophole in German tax law that is supported by contributors and actually rewards movies that perform badly, via a writeoff at the end of the year.

It has been recently reported that the loophole in German tax law has been revised. Starting January 2006, contributors to failed films will no longer be able to profit from failed films through a tax writeoff at the end of the year. This may well result in an end to Boll's film career, as it would make it impossible for him to capitalize on films that fail at the box office, resulting in a loss of investors."

Sounds like we could soon be free of bad movies from games, at least via one channel
