This game is certainly one that will last you a long time if you take the time to play it out fully. When you start the game, there is simply a huge range of things to do, and you are never forced in a particular direction - it really is your choice. Probably one of the best value games you can get.

"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
Well, I can only spend about 5 quid anyway, so this will be the one my money is goign for!
I'll pipe in on Morrowind:
I recently found out that a friend of mine has Morrowind. He says he never really played it because he didn't like the combat system. He didn't like how whenever he swung a sword, he missed (I don't think he was too fond of the 1st person view, but you can change that). Well, this is just something that happens in the beginning until you get your skills up. It's pretty annoying and almost turned me off of the game at first. Give the game a chance. It's one of the best games of all time.
Best. Game. Ever.
If you can get past the massive learning curve and the annoying things like a stupidly slow walk/run speed at the beggining, and you're prepared to get stuck in, its the most rewarding game I've found. Definately google to find the various fan forums, as they often have plug in links, and lots of other material. I've got over 120 plug-ins running in the game, some doing tiny things, some adding entire new continents, they basicly double the game in length, improve the texture quality, and add many many many new other things. Its worth looking into them.
Play it![]()
Yep, get it. Graphically it's not cutting edge, but there is a mahooosive amount to do in game, although it's slow going at first. If you want something to entertain you for ages, this is the game to get.

Despite some annoyances, Morrowind was my favourite game of all time. It has a lot of interesting environments and cities but it did have too many bizarre and dusty ones also. I didn't mind the combat because in an epic RPG like Morrowind it is just not that important, though I did grow weary of fighting those damn Cliff Racers.
The big switch to 3D killed the RPG genre. I would say Morrowind was the first RPG to successfully deliver an epic, classical RPG into the realm of modern 3D games. Its graphics are still quite nice though certainly not up to standards of the latest and greatest. It has quite the modding community also.
I would highly recommend this game even for today. However, Oblivion: Elder Scrolls IV is due to be released before year's end. You will need a high end system or an Xbox 360 to play it but I believe it will easily be the best game ever and perhaps even lead to a resurgence of the genre. Check out the videos for it here: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/media_movies.htm
Another vote here. There's nothing more rewarding than breaking in to someones vault and finding more money and armour and weapons than you have ever dreamed of. Just remember don't go headlong rushing into it from the start. Take easy routes through the maps earning experience on the way then upgrade your character and your away.
One tip I found was to bind some magical boots with speed and the flying ability. Trust me Flying in some of the mountain areas is an absolute god send. You can fly right over the bad guys. The mountains can become very, very confusing at first. Don't forget you can always become a vampyr on one of the missions if you get bitten or contract the disease.
Fabulous game. Get your pre ordered for Oblivion down now.
Don't give too much away mate...things in morrowind should be discovered, not aimed for as goals
Not sure if Oblivions going to be any good tbh, thinking theres a large chance I'll feel very "meh" about it.

Yup I have a the same feeling with Oblivion, the cut down weapons classes and a few other things. I can handle a slight dumb down of the game. But too much and it detracts from the "do anything/anytime" open endedness of the game. Now don't get me wrong I loved Fable, but I don't want Oblivion to end up like it.
Well, I thought fable was ****, and if they do that with Oblivion then I'll probably just have to cry or something.
I can handle cut down weapon classes, I mean, there was no point in short blades in morrowind, they had virtually no advantages over longs...but things like the always on compass(objective compass) system are making me extremely nervous. Could be abit like Deus ex/Deus ex 2 methinks.
I didn't mean exactly like fable. That was a RPG on rails. I meant just the dumbing down of certain aspects I can deal with in very slight ways. Fable was alright for what it was. As for Deus Ex I loved it. But don't even start with the horrible pointless sequel.
The thing is even messing about with seemingly pointless things like the weapons classes leads to dumbin down of other things and it sorta snowballs. Till in essence all you have left is a Fable clone game. I'd hate this to happen. TES should be deep. Lets pray they keep it that way.
Oblivion is going to be more open ended (200 hours of game play, 20 - 40 for the main quest). They did merge a few skills but I don't see much of an issue there. The combat looks to be greatly improved. Obviously the graphics with real-time soft shadows will be a quantum leap over Oblivion and the textures look fantastic in the demo videos. There will be 50 hours of voice overs, 9000 unique items, real world physics including sound, 1500+ NPCs with radiant AI with their own schedules, stealth will be greatly enhanced, playing as pure magic character is supposed to be viable, it will be set in 16 sq. miles of land mass as opposed to the 4 (8 including water) in Morrowind, dynamic weather and time, etc.
Most followers of TES are pumped over the impending release of Oblivion and its boards are amongst the busiest I ever saw. Quite a number of previews have given this game a full 5 out of 5 stars—it should be awesome.
You don't have to use the compass. I'm not sure about fast travel but I'm sure it won't be a showstopper.
Yeah, I got what you meant. Fable was an RPG a 5 year old could play, morrowind was not. Morrowind was a serious game, fable wasn't.Originally Posted by BrandX

I doubt that somehow. They're saying its going to be "more focused" and things like that, I reckon it'll be considerably less..open..freeform, although hopefully not to the extent that it'll ruin things.Oblivion is going to be more open ended
This was done to death on the morrowind summit forums, which for the most part as a collective look to be extremely worried that Bethesda are going to screw up Oblivion just to pander to the idiots in the world. But the compass you do have to use, it can't be turned off, and if its there, and its pointing one way, you're hardly going to go off in the other way searching for a character you know is in the opposite direction. I'm hoping dearly it can be edited out pronto, otherwise it has serious implications for any sort of exploration aspect the game had.You don't have to use the compass. I'm not sure about fast travel but I'm sure it won't be a showstopper.

Does it work well being first person then?
I would say, it works extremely well, gives a much better feeling of immersion, although some old-school RPG fans find the transition hard.
