    2GB needed to run BF2?

    Hi all,

I'm spec'ing up a system at the moment with the aim to run BF2 (amongst other games), and have heard several opinions that 2gb is needed to get the game running smooth. So I thought this would be the best place to ask - 1Gb or 2, what do you think?

Also, what graphics card would you recommend for bf2- I mean, do I need to shell out hundreds on a 7800GT/X for example, or would something else a little cheaper do just as well.

Many thanks, I look forward to your replies!

Well, I had 1GB and BF2 would occasionaly hang for a split second here and there, upped it to 1.5GB and no more hangs BF2 is a very memory hungry little game.

Regarding graphics my X700 Pro would run everything set to high/farthest draw distance with 2x AA @ 1024x768 and would be fine (just over 30 FPS most of the time).

Maybe get a Sapphire GTO2 like I've just bought (woo hoo!) as that would be a damn fine card for BF2 at around £150.00.

Pls excuse my complete lack of knowlege here, but is the GTO2 an ATI or Nvidia card?

It's an ATI card that can be unlocked to the spec of an X850

2Gb is a little exsessive tbh. i have 512mb of Corsair ram as one of my dimm slots has gone, but i havent noticed any diffence between the 1Gb and the 512Mb and mine plays smooth as you like ...

I went from 1Gb to 2Gb and found huge improvement. I was running 1280x1024 with 6800GT and the loading times for the levels was unbelievably long. It is down to around 30 secs now and I am usually one of the first people onto the server as a new level starts.

ive read that with 2gb it will load maps quicker when playing online and therefore you'll get pick of the vehicles at the start of each round.

i run with 1gb and am considering upgrading.

i've still got enough time to make a cup of tea when levels load.

i think the lag is even worse after the patch, and I'm running on a gig of ram.
once in game it's fine with a gig or even 512

I'd agree with that - unfortunately, I've got 2 gig in my development rig, and only a gig in my gaming rig

I get along with BF2 fine with just 1gig. But you NEED 1gb+ to run FEAR.

Thanks for the replies guys, people seem to be getting good results with varying levels of ram, but i think i might go fo 2gb.

Any more opinions on the gfx cards? Not sure I need to go 7800GT anymore!

    Thanks again.

I would definately read up on the Sapphire GTO2 as your graphics solution, would give you excellant perfomance and free up some cash to spend on other upgrades.

Here in the U.K. it's only overclockers.co.uk that have any stock as apparently they bought almost all of the U.K. stock outright

Cost me £165.62 including VAT and delivery.

I played BF2 demo with 512Mb and it was a pain. I stuck another 512Mb and haven't look back since. Made a massive difference to BF2, and HL2. I don't get many slow downs. Also not noticed much lag in BF2. Occasionally I notice some slow downs on crappy servers though.
