    Commanding in BF2

Yes, another BF2 question, this time about being the commander.

Can anyone give me a run down of what all the buttons on the commander screen are supposed to do, especially along the bottom (referring to kits etc), or point me towards some helpful resource?

    Thanks.

each icon along the bottem shows what kits you have on the battlefield, you can then order specific soldiers to do certain things, e.g. send a spec ops to blow some artillery or an engineer to fix a bridge.

obviously you can give each sqauds seperate orders too.

its good to play some single player to get familiar with it. see you on the battlefield....

Thats a good idea, I hadn't thought of that...being a bit thick. I'd completely forgotten about the single player part. I've created my own games in order to fly around maps and stuff, but not played the single player part.

Thanks for the info - that all makes sense.

    Mutley,

    Quick commander tips...

Always do a scan before using a UAV so you can see where the most enemies are and deploy your UAV over them.

Listen to your squads and drop supplies where they need them, plus don't drop supplies nears enemies as they will just pick off your guys so drop supplies behind buildings/round corners etc.

Maybe play as an engineer and hide near your artillery/UAV trailer so that you can repair them if destroyed.

    ... happy commanding

have you found the menu that pops up if you hover over a squad and do a right click?

lots of stuff on there - i particularly like rebuking a squad - particulalry when the invoice game chimes up with "my grandmother could do better!!"

always get a few lol's appearing in the console.

also - if you drop supplies next to your artillery / uav / radar after the other team has blown them up then it will repair them.

i like to use the supplies crate to draw out enemy foot soldiers just after ive called an artillery strike - action artillery - drop crate - watch soldiers head for crate - watch them fly!
.....Witty sig is uploading, please wait.....

I just read on http://www.totalbf2.com that the commander can hide somewhere do they can't be killed:

    "Commander Mode
Each side can choose a single "commander" player, based on profile ranking. Commanders must "apply" for the position in-game, and, when elected, these players do actively participate in the battle, and can be killed, however the commander has a base where he can avoid being killed.Commanders have four primary abilities: satellite scan, artillery strikes, Predator UAV recon, and supply drops. "

    Where is that then?

Avoid being killed. not "can't be". If you stay at your base and go prone in a building away from important stuff (like artillery or radar) then any infiltrators sent to destroy your assets are unlikely to find you. On some map the starting bases cannot be captured so you don't get that many enemies going there.

I find u have to be careful on some poubby servers being a commander as theres people that wont squad up or vote against u and yet wont follow orders etc so being a commander is generally a waste...

Hmm, there are some people who can be arseholes and vote against you even when you're doing a good job but being a commander isn't a waste. A well placed artillery strike and supply drop can definately change the course of a game.

If your new to BF2 it can be an easy way to get moving up the ranks so that you can get a couple of unlocks to make your life easier...

I reckon a good commander can be very important. A supply drop to a remote sniper, or one to repair vehicles in the field, an artillery strike to clear flag defence and, most importantly - UAV! UAV gives your teammates the locations of all nearby enemies on their radar - send it over flags you plan to cap, and if you can place it so that it covers two nearby flags! Artilllery can be handy to take care of people waiting for a heli or for a sniper who keeps annoying your troops (although its not very good in urban terrains, not sure if it will get the rooftops all the times).
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
