I think that article is inaccurate too. It says that the PSP is not region locked. I've read that games are not region locked, but movies still are for the PSP. Someone correct or confirm.Originally Posted by website
It's also likely that if Sony did decide to not region lock a console, it would be in AU only, as that is where the legislation in question resides.
As for used games--if Sony implements any system that pairs software with hardware IDs, no one will buy that crap.
I dont think they will go through with it, they will loose a LOT of customers if they keep the game ID thingy.
What would happen to trading in games?

you wouldn't.Originally Posted by midzt
I wouldn't read too much into it, as I'm sure they know that if they did enforce it on retail games it could really scupper the entire PS3 project..
However, there could be other uses in terms of a system for preventing pre-release software from being stolen, etc

Correct the games are not locked, but the movies are (I have a Jap PSP with Jap, Us and English games). The games still have a region on the box though, hmmm..Originally Posted by smtkr

The registration issue won't work, I can't see it being implemented. The parralel with music would be that you buy a CD but can only play it on the CD player in your living room, you can't play it in the car etc etc. Madness.
The beauty of consoles is that you put the disc in and away you go, you can take the game round to a mates house, put the disc in and away you go ....
Ultimately implemeneting such a "protection" system is going to frustrate their customers to the point that they will simply buy a competitors console, whilst those that pirate games will continue to do so, as it will only be a matter of time before the new copy protection is circumvented.
I'm looking forward to the PS3 nontheless.

It's a "rumour".
Methinks it's a load of crap. There's no way at all they would do anything like this. It would be commercial suicide.
It would appear that there are two marketing machines going at the moment, one spitting out positive rumours about Xbox 360, and the other spitting out possibly untrue rumours about PS3. I would suggest these rumours are coming from, ooh, the west coast of America, rather than Japan...
the thing you're forgetting is that this would actually have benefits.
the majority of buyers wont know about the 2nd hand game protection, so will probably buy anyways. xbox wont be advertised as 'play your mates games' cos its illegal anyway (as is selling them 2nd hand).
the thing is, if everyone is forced to buy new games, prices will drop because more copies will be sold..
i cant personally see how it would be implemented (part of the disc is blue-ray ram perhaps?), i think online registration is more likely (aka steam etc).. but that coudl be thwarted by simply removing the net connection..

Never gonna happen. No way at all. If the cost comes down, companies hardly ever pass the saving on to the consumer. Whilst people are willing to pay stupid amounts for a game, the companies will charge them.Originally Posted by 5lab
I 100% disagree with you about it having benefits. There are just far, far too many disadvantages for this to be a reality. Sony will not do something as mind blowingly stupid as this when they've got a competitor in MS that doesn't have a "play on one system" concept.
