    Any X3 masters around

Just picked up X3 the other day. I’m an old fan of elite and wondered what the modern equivalent (X3) would be like. Thing is I’m finding it utterly impeneratable! I seem to do a lot of flying around getting confused as hell as to what to exactly do, the game doesn't really seem to help noobs that much.

I've read some good stuff on the egosoft forums but they seem to be more around walkthroughs for the first couple of missions.

I'm interested in perusing some trading, can anyone suggest a good guide or perhaps some helpful suggestions if you have the time - something along the lines of what to trade and with whom, milk runs etc?

Looks like a really great game but I need a little help getting my foot in the door to get me going.

first off, make sure you started on the easy difficulty level, the normal is actually very very hard.

As for some good milk runs, solar powerplants in ore belt (east of cloudbase southwest, where the goners live) to the silicon mine in whatever the sector to the south of cloudbase south west is called. THen when the silicon wafers drop in price, you can take them to any of 5 or 6 factories in argon prime to make a killing.

Theres also a similar route just north of argon prime. You want to be doing all that in your mercury. Also, a good tip is to clock up enough recognition through trading/fragging random pirates to get a police licence before proceeding with the story, then youll actually get a good amount of cash while doing the missions.

Anything else and ill try to help

Make sure youinstall the trading system extensions as well, money well spoent, otherwise you have to dock at every station to get prices, when you get practiced youll learn to guess buy the stockl level, but its a big help early on. Also your buster has a best buys/sells extension installed (which you can buy, but i wont tell youfrom who because i dont want to give much away) thats a big help, if you can be bothered farting around carrying 30 or so units at a time, which i cant, youll never make any money that way, main reason why the normal level is so hard.

Im currently on an epic trek to go get one, though when i get there ill probably find theyve changed the layout from x2 and i have to trek all the way back across the universe.

I saw a reference to this somewhere in the myriad of menus! Is this something that you buy at a shipyard or equipment dock thingy!

Let me get this right in my head, is the buster the slow moving trading vessel you get given at the start of the easy game? I recall that you start in a fighter, I guess this isnt the buster though?

    Cheers again!

The buster is the fighter, mercury is the transport ship.

The trading system extension is bought at any of: equipment docks, trading stations.

Does anyone find this game particularly buggy? I loved X2 but have held off from buying this because the various reviews I've read say it's very crashtastic...

It was, but a patch was out before it was even released, with anew one due iout in not long. Ive had 1 issue, and that was caused by activesync trying to take focus anyway

Dont think youll be dissapointed, but make sure to patch first, i think they broke savegame compatibility going 1>1.2, and theyre now at 1.21, which gives me about an extra 6or7 fps (doesnt sound like a lot, but i was averaging around 25, it makes a huge difference)

Had the same thing happen to me >.<

    I'm totally stuck.

I'm finding it hard to make any sort of money at the moment (started on normal) so I thought i'd progress with the story some... But now i'm stumped.
I need to pick up some spy drones, from a sector called "ocracoke's storm" ~ but i'll be a blue badger if I can find it. Asking for directions, I get as far as Empire's edge ~ whereby everyone tells helpfully tells me it's to the west. But there's no west gate. If there is a west gate it's incredibly well hidden. I've spent about an hour scouting that sector, and i'm tellin' ya ~ i've seen everything there is to be seen.

    Any ideas?

Herulach - thanks for the advice. I got to play a little on Sunday night and followed your trading route, its all starting to make sense. Im now making poppy hand over fist and that trading software extension was worth every credit, helps a lot. Are there any more must haves like that?

Not really, although if youre ever doing any fighting all the fight software is pretty good. When i actually get on with the story (gta liberty city has taken over a bit, although its pretty sweet to have on long trade runs, ive found myself doing them without seta so i can get a mission done on the way across a sector), im gonna look into setting my mercury as a universe trader as described in the manual, id quite like a couple of factories as well, plenty of cash, missle costs stack up ridiculously when you start fighting properly, or they did in the others.

the only other thing worth its weight in gold is the best buys sells locator, and a jump drive, but jump drives are hella expensive, and the bet buys locator is over the other side of them universe.

I think it says a lot for the game that ive now got about 25 hours of play time in it, and have only done 2 missions (including the compulsory beginning one).

Originally i was just gonna get a police licence, then do the story, but that evolved into wanting to get a better ship (big fan of the split ones in the old games) and then into having a universe trader. Hoping to get really into it over christmas holidays,, like i did with xtension, and then with hardwar (which is ace by the way, if you can find a copy and get figure out how to get it running on windows XP)

25 fps?!? My system is slightly lower specc'd than yours (X800GTO with everything else the same), was hoping it would run better than that. Presume you have AA turned on though. Also read that the HUD causes the majority of graphical probs.

In X2 the economy was such that you got much better ROI from solar power plants than from anything else you could buy...so I never bought many 'advanced' factories , it was always better to add more SPP's . Have they fixed this in X3? I wanna make some MAD weapons
