Which of the versions supports network play?
Ideally looking to play this on the uni network.
Is it only the C+C Generals? Or is there an earlier version that supports networking?
Cheers

I was playing C&C original across a network in 1998. All PC C&C games are networkable afaik.

I've played every game from Command Conquer: Red Alert (the original) across a network. Never tried (or even played) the original Command Conquer.
"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
I seem to remember being unable to play the original C&C across my network. I think it might have been only possible via a null modem cable or something like that?
The games from Red Alert onwards were network compatible I'm sure.
OrangeAgent
Might install the original and RA later, heh.
Ok cheers everyone, ill see if i can pick up a few copies of Red Alert 2 (as it wont need such great specs for peeps pcs)
does anyone know the amount of people that can be in one game tho? 8?
im also assuming that it should be easy to set up over a network, set a pc up as a server and game away?
final thing, ill buy a few copies, but i can assume there are a few no-cd hacks out there?

All of them
Most fun is of course still C&C:Red Alert (with aftermath and counterstrike installed) and they support up to 8players iirc.
Some people think that the newer ones are better but they are just plain wrongRed Alert 2 was too easy as you could just get a load of chrono-troops and wipe out a base from the inside out while doing multiple tank rushes as a distraction, whereas RA1 was a bit different
I used to love turtling and creating a huge base as soviets, lots of barbed wire round the outside with camo-pillar boxes in the midst of the wire to catch out any infantry, backed up by telsa(sp? could never getit right() coils as a last resort; and plenty of cannons for removing enemy tanks
Granted my attacks tended to be a case of lots of mammoth tanks, a tanya and some missile trucks, hardly the most sophisticated by there was a kind of creaping barrage tactic going on there with the missile trucks..damn i wish i hadnt just got into work lol wanna play it again now
As for how easy it is to play, its simple. It works with a lobby system, with one person as a host and the rest just connect to your IP - or connect to the game in the lobby if your network is setup correctly. Great fun to play, wasted hours playing Red Alert over the net on a lowly 36.6k modem..hours of fun for all![]()

Although getting it working on a windows XP machine would be a challange and a half
Iirc Original C&C required ipx protocol to work over a lan rather the tcpip. But hey we are talking about a fair few years ago.
Just came accross my original C&C disks, might put a small rig together and have a play. Though I only have TFT's in the house......
I loved the cruise ships in RA as you could easily wipe out a base that was near the coast.
By the way RA is also hard to set up networking for in Windows XP. instead create a dual boot system (Windows 98, and XP.)
Woohoo now Assistant Manager!
Ive done a little reading, and the multiplayer part of C&C is not compatible with windows XP.
Search for Command and conquer on Win XP, and im sure you find the article.
As I remembered, C&C uses IPX to work on LANS, and the type it uses is not supported by XP/2000 any more, bummer.
(Am currently loooking for a slow old system to try and get this working, only problem is the slowest is a p3-850. Having played it on a P75 and it was lightning fast im kinda worried!!!)
Win XP here supports IPX and i'm pretty certain win2k will too, not sure why you think it wouldn't?. Sure maybe not as standard but IPX still exists, and while i'm not sure C&C would work on XP without some "fixes" i'm fairly certain you would be able to get it working in compatability mode etc. Used to play original C&C with Win98 sec edition so its not that much of a problem.
