    X-Box 360 as a Media Centre Extender

    Right Then!

So I've ordered my 360 from Scan and am praying for pre-Christmas delivery. Are there any reviews around the Web of its multimedia capabilities? Do we know if it will play divx movies if they're stored on a Media Centre PC? I know that it won't play them via Windows Media Connect but does this apply to Media Centre too?

Has anyone tried this and if so, how does it work in general?

Apparantly DIVX movies arent on the list. So prepare to convert everything to wmv... It sucks, but wait, and people will find a way of playing the stuff they have... and hopefully M$ will release a patch so you can do it off XP, instead of MCE.... how many people have MCE ffs!

I don't think MS will release a patch, after all their trying to get MCE into every home.

But will I be able to stream DivX from a MCE PC? I'm fairly certain that it won't work with Windows Media Connect but not a clue regarding MCE...

As far as i'm aware there is no support for DivX on the 360, even if you have MCE. I doubt that MS will add support for this format either.

you can stream any type of format off the MCE PC, as long as the PC has the codecs to play it, the xbox will.

I wasn't aware you needed Media Center Edition of Windows XP, merely Windows Media Connect, found as a free download on Windows Update.

Oh wait, I didn't put any dollar signs in that post, best add some. Hey guys, Micro$$$$$$oft, amirite?

The official xbox site says you need windows media center edition to stream movies, tv etc but most versions of windows will be able to stream music and display photos

Aye, but they may not be telling you everything here, as they're looking to sell you a piece of video conversion software...
