    just a quick question...

...thats bound to infuriate te die-hards out there, and I'm sorry to start 'yet another thread on the new xbox' but it is begining to annoy me how the whole thing's being treated.
what is all the fuss over this new xbox thingy?
really, what can it do thats just so back breakingly good that means so many people rate it highly and want one? will it really improve your quality of life to such an extent it warrents the sort of blind frenzy that has possessed some into getting one of these things?
I'm a bit baffled really - ok so it plays cds, games, dvds...didn't the last one do that? and the playstation one too?
from what I've heard this one also gets hot and crashes...surely that cant be good. wouldn't it be better to get one in the new year when the market has calmed down? supplies are limited it seems so surely it makes sense to relax and wait...what? you're 'old' xbox is suddenly crap? how so, a few years ago it was the 'best thing ever'...surely you're not just getting one to show off...its all about how others see you isn't it.

also whats wrong with the PC? I guess thats out of fashion now too isn't it...

I'm still buying PS2 games and thinking about picking up a Gamecube. I'm also sick of all the XBOX 360 hype. Besides the things you mention above, the game lineup is garbage. I might get excited when Oblivion comes out, but until then, I think this is ridiculous.

Well, although the 360 does look good, I wouldn't get one. Not that I have a problem with them, they look like great little things, but theres nothing wrong with my PC, and I prefer my PC, and it's ever upgrading.. constantly, which is better than a console imo.

I think the main hype over the 360 is just all the new technology for a not bad price, you get some damn good hardware in it for what you pay, then there is hack-ability (if there is such a word).

I meet a lot of ex-PC players on Xbox live and I feel that the option to be able to sit in their own living rooms, sit back on a sofa and play online is the main argument for turning their backs on PC gaming.

If all of the games available on PC were available on a console powerful enough to handle them, I would no longer want to sit at my PC to play them.

If the hard core pc's gamers want to sit in their lounge and play games online then a SFF pc or HTPC does exactly the same job - and you can get console game pad adaptors so you can plug them in to your pc aswell!
I love using my PS2 controller for games like NFSMW etc

Granted... but how much would you have to spend on a SFF system to get the same quality?

How much longer would it take to boot up?

How much more at risk is it of virus/crashing etc for the "average" user?

The first Xbox I bought was on launch day and I still use it now, it's never crashed once. My PC crashes or freezes often and it cost me about 4x as much as the Xbox.

The other common complaint, damaged discs, is caused by people stupidly moving the xbox while its reading discs, which common sense tells you is a bad idead, but if you are lacking common sense its also in the instructions. If you lack both these skills you deserve all you get

Point's taken, but then how fast will the xbox360 become outdated? How much can you upgrade it buy?

I agree that it is good at what it does - that is letting you play console games - but there are somethings that it will never replace the PC for. Browsing the internet, sure its possibly via a console (surprisingly well via the dreamcast) but without a keyboard it is a pain..and I dont know if there is one for the 360 yet but you can bet it will be expensive if/when there is one.
Media center..Well most of us already have a hi-fi, dvd player etc in our living rooms - so the only advantage here is MP3s...but well you already own the CDs for those MP3s (generally) so can play them in your hi-fi..or if you have a wlan streaming is simple enough.
Watching divX movies etc? Fair enough but there are lots of divc dvd players these days..
Integration of all these things to one box? yeah it does that, but like (in my experience) most integrated one-for-all solutions, it doesnt seem to do as well as separates could? Although not having my own to test wtih (only been playing about with my mates) and the fact that it hasnt been out that long means that this point is still out for contention

The point i'm trying to make is that the main reason to buy a console like the 360 would be to play games, and have the traditional benefits of console games. That is simple, pick up and play ability (in terms of put in the disc and it works, not game complexity - although that is another issue), lack of patches (as they are not needed) and the abiluity to play multiplayer all on one machine.

But even here the 360 falls down - crashes on some games already (may or may not be hardware related) The possibility of patches via Xbox live? That is surely just going to turn console developers into lazy developers like with the PC scene, where games can be rushed out without thorough testing as the vast majority of users will be able to get patches..

Then we come to the games themselves..hardly an impressive launch lineup is there; PDZ or PGR3 are really your main choices..A game stolen from nintendo (grr @ rare) and an (admittedly good) racing game. hmm

But then the ideal situation here is to just get both a 360 and a PC. neither machine can do the tasks of the other brilliantly - just as the 360 has the faults listed above, and it can't really cope with fast paced FPS (control pads just DONT WORK aswell as KB+mouse)and hasnt a chance in hell with RTS, but then PC's are generally pants for racing, sport and beat'em up games..

So each has it's place. I won't be getting a 360, i'll be waiting for the revolution (assuming this clever new controller idea actaully works well) and keeping my PC for now

Also you have to take in account how great Live is compared with all other online gaming services. If you want to play arcade/racing/sports games online the xbox 360 is really the only decent way to do it, a friends systemn that works.

Also the main reason you think mouse/keyboard is better is becuase thats what you are used to, I recently let one of my mates play HL2 on PC, hes not played FPS on PC before, and he found it very hard to control, its just not what he is ued to. Having played both ways a lot I find both better in different situations - mouse is better for distance aiming but joypad is much better for turning and moving quick for up close fighting (you dont run out of mouse mat).

Yeah I know that with practice you can get much better with a control bad, but there are limitations beyond that. Mainly the fact that an anaolgue stick cannot give you the same precision as a mouse can. You don;t run out of mouse mat unless you have the sensitivity set really low anyway..or have a tiny mat

I remember how well the C-Pad and analogue stick on teh N64 worked, was great for goldeneye, Perfect Dark etc etc - and I can still use it now. But it just isn't as accurate and precise, and when you don't have auto-aim on you need to be deadly accurate - one or 2 pixels can make the difference

Yes it is mainly what you get used to, and I am clearly biased and fully admit to that, but I still don't think it is good enough. Even game developers realise this - take Deus Ex 2 for example, how much was cut from the UI there to make it Xbox compatable? They stripped out the inventory system and redid it in a horrible slow way, got rid of the skills and XP system.. all because the console control pads didnt have the flexability/range of buttons to cope with it. That contributed to ruining the game (leaving aside the graphical issues) for many people.
