    Avoid damaging disks in 360

Some obvious advice from the Official Xbox Magazine
    "
Once you have inserted a game disc into your Xbox 360 it is imperative that you do not then switch the consoles position from horizontal to vertical – or visa versa. In doing so you run the risk of the disc within being permanently scratched and good for nothing more than placing a hot cup of coco on.

With the Xbox 360 powered and a DVD inserted, the disc rumbles along at such a rate that if the unit is moved substantially it can clatter into the hard surface of the drive itself, leaving the disc with fatal engravings.

Microsoft have themselves warned you of the dangers of playing twister with your Xbox 360 in the units accompanying manual. Remember that? It’s the book you immediately discarded with all the green bags the Xbox 360 came packaged in. The appropriate section reads:

    IMPORTANT:
To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:
Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions.

Never use cracked discs. They can shatter inside the console and jam or break internal parts.

When the console is vertical, do not use discs that are smaller than standard DVDs and CDs.

So, unless you have a penchant for £40 silver Frisbees we suggest you take heed of these wise words, pick an appropriate orientation for your Xbox 360 and only change this whist the power is off. Oh, and don’t water the machine either. That is also very bad…"

Some good advice there, the discs do spin at a crazy speed I can hear it over my speakers some of the time.

I did laugh when I watched that Video of someone putting Quake4 into xbox, moving it from hoz to vert and back then took it out really damaged.

Its pretty obvious that a disc spinning around at god knows what speed isnt going to sit well if you start moving it from side to side.

Surely this is common sense though ?

Do you pick your PC up and start to shake it while reading your favourite pr0n disc and DVD films ?

Nope I thought so... so Why would anyone do it with a console is beyond comprehension really

Lets face it with the PS2 they also advised not to change the position however the 360 spins the dvds at a higher speeds so its obvious some damage will be done.

Yeah as said I would take this to be common sense.. although maybe handy that it has been posted for people unaware of the damages a simple movement can do.

One thing that is confusing is the booklet that comes with the 360. it shows tehe 360 lying face down, if I didn't know people who told me otherwise I would have doen exactly the same

Its the name which encourages this, so its Microsoft's fault.

Kinda common sense, but I didn't think it would damage THAT easily - hopefully they will put bumpers in on newer DVDRoms

when you apply a force to a spinning object, that force is redirected by 90 degrees. To prove this, get a bicycle wheel and tie one end of the bearing to a bit of string, hold it so they tyre is facing the ceiling/floor and spin it. Watch what happens. When the Disc in an Xbox is doing over 100 revolutions per second I expect this can become more pronounced.
This principle is how gyros work
