    Windows 98 Game on XP?

    Hey all...

I have an amazing old game called Ultimate Soccer Manage 98/99. I love it so much, and I havent played it for years, becuase it doesnt work on Windows Xp.

Is there a way I can make it work on Win XP, without having to install Windows 98?

    Thanks.

You could try and run it in compatability mode.
Find the .exe file for the program (normally to be found in the games home directory) and right click. One of the tabs at the top of this window is "Compatability".

Click to put a tick in the box "run this program in compatability mode for: "
And select Windows 98 from the drop down list ....

No guarantee this will work though I hasten to add, XP will do its best but sometimes even that's not enough. You could try playing with some of the other compatibility modes such as running it Windowed and see if that helps.

I tried this on Rainbow 6 Rogue Spear and it struggled to run it even though the machine spec was WELL over the requirements..

Thanks, I will give this a try when I get home. Its a shame, the game is arguably the greatest football manager game of all time.

Hah yes I remember that game quality.

Not as good as premier manager 98 though..I know many die hard fans shun it in favour of Excel football manager XXXX (AkA championship manager/football manager) but I enjoyed it Much more game like, less pages of pure stats and a quality (for the time) match engine.

Can't get it to work on XP either though even with compatability mode - the graphics just don't display properly

Your best bet if you can't get it to run is to try vmware or virtual PC as i think it's now known. It should let you run windows 98 on your XP machine via emulation. Costs to buy the software though, although its almost (almost) guarenteed to work and i *think* there is a trial version that you could use first if you don't want to spend some money.

    edit: more info here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx
and there is a 45 day trial available

I've found VMWare a bit complicated to use and pretty difficult to actually get a 2nd OS to install. Personally I'd go with the Microsoft one, easy interface and installing the extra OS is so easy.

I done a Dual Boot earlier this year with Me because I wanted to play Blood 2 and Indy : Infernal Machine. However the newest drivers from N Vidia seemed to be causing me probs or it may have just been my PC didnt like the Dual boot with Me, not overly sure.

Having a tinker with Virtual PC at the min so will keep you posted !

it's worth pointing out that the disk performance on vmware is about twice that of vpc - and vmware 5.5 supports dual-processor, 64-bit guest machines, with 3d acceleration if you mess with some experimental options

For some reason I couldnt get the guest OS to install on VMWare.

On Virtual PC I have my Windows 98 SE installed but have ran into problems with like you mentioned the graphics. Its not finding my NVidia hardware, saying that there isnt an NVidia chip in the PC so drivers cant be installed. This could pose a problem !

    Any ideas Hexeh ?

I dont think they had game playing in mind when they created this software. For me I want to get rid of the partition I created for the Dual Boot giving me extra space. At least using this software allows you to run it with the main OS in the background so you dont have to mess about rebooting into a different OS for playing the old games.

Once I installed 98 it had my vga adapter down as an S3 and fully configured but no 3D Acceleration ! Beauty of it was that it allowed me access to the net on 98 using the modem settings on my XP so I managed to get the Nvidia drivers no probs and stored on my virtual hard disk. Shame that it doesnt actually allow me to install them !

can't be done. vpc and vmware emulate an old s3 trio v64+ graphics card - no 3d acceleration (though the experimental 3d acceleration in vmware might work with some host/guest combinations, see http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-84344.html)
