    Darwinia

What's so good about it? It looks crap, I've seen screenshots and trailers and don't get it .

Visually it looks crud, but this is a typical scenario of 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' - well apparently from what I hear its real substance is gameplay and its retro-abstract style graphics complements the concept of the game as well. But I haven't played/ordered it so I am not prepared to fully back the game up... well Gabe Newell says the games pretty addictive so erm... trust him?

Yeah. I guess so. I had a look on their website and they claim to be bringing out a demo... which is good, because I'd like to try it out first before going to buy it.

Edit: *Cough* Bittorrent *Cough*. I think there was a previous demo that used to be on the site, but isn't anymore.

It's a fantastic game, kind a warped mix between Space Invaders, Command & Conquer and Tron. Definately get it.

[EDIT: Don't download it you goit, wait for the demo, it's made by some tiny independant company who deserve every penny]

Agreed. It's really good - I think the visuals are excellent too. It's not that challenging for RTS players I imagine, as I completed it no bother, and I'm rubbish at RTS games, but it has a great atmosphere to it, and nicely layers up the upgrades and enemies level upon level.

There are a couple of demos kicking around, so it's worth getting one.

Also - you should get it straight from the developers, not via Steam. Gives them more money that way as they almost went bankrupt after this came out originally.

Wasn't this game out quite some time ago (Not like years and years ago, but within a 1 year period)?

Yes, but is seems to be periodically coming back onto the radar, for various reasons (extra content released, Steam release etc...)

linux and mac demos are still on darwinia.co.uk

http://www.3dgamers.com/games/darwinia/downloads/ has both windows demos (the new one has a different UI to the first one & retail release version)

as for 'looks like crap', you're a really cold-hearted graphics whore if the only graphics you can handle are dull, 'realistic' ones - it's delightfully retro, in a 'tron' kind of way, and looks beautifully crisp at a decent resolution. see also: rez

I bought it and its a breath of fresh air compared to the FEARs, Q4s of the world. Simple and solid gameplay. We should support the smaller independant publishers/houses out there, I cant imagine any of the big names producing a game like this. Go get it.

Sentinel was great, had that on an old Amstrad. Good game. Seem to recall you had to creep up on the sentinel when he wasnt looking!
