What FPS to get?

Im looking to a buy a first person shooter at christmas thatll play well on the PC im getting at christmas (in sig). Ive played older games in the UT series and was looking into getting something like that. Any suggestions are welcome

Btw, online play is obviously a must

Even if someone could give me a list of them all and i could check them out myself, itd be appreciated.

Have you got half life 2? Personally i would get that then download some mods for online entertainment. Personally I find DOD-S to be my fav game, can be very fast paced, and a single round can last for ages with constant respawn, choke points and complete chaos sometimes. Thers also a load of excellent custom maps out. If you do decide to get it, I purchased HL2 retail (in sore) then added DOD-S on steam. Cost abourt £27 and gives me a range of stuff to play.

For me the games focussed on online play like Battlefield 2 and DoD-s give better play online than thos that have it tagged on the side like farcry. Although Farcry can still be a grin.

Day Of Defeat Source. Its a world war 2 online only fps. Axis V Allies, flag capping game, but unlike CS you respawn after about 10 secs when you die. Single round can last up to 20 mins, at thats normally constant fighting around a choke point.

Bit of info on new stuff on the horizon here

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2005/...effects/1.html

Although the number of official maps is limited, they support custom map builders and some are extremly detailed, large, loads of places to hide etc.

Also worth trying out soem of the other mods that you can play through steam, natural selection is ne, soem form of red orchestra is comming, counter strike, etc..

Yep thats how CS players type

Something to do with IQ < pant size

They are different types of fps, and most people like one or the other not both. Although they are both ps, the gameplay styles are very different. Although I do have to admit playing the CS Aztec map in DoD is great. Very well designed with nice chokes but a variety of ways to get places.

But if you get the right HL2 package you can try both and make your own mind up

Mate get Half Life 2 if you haven't got it - you'll love it and Counter Strike: Source is simply awesome.

If you can get the pack including DoD:S - great game

Well, hexus has more of a commuinity for CS:S players than other games, if you like to play with the same people for a lot of the time. It also comes free with HL2, so there's no other cost involved. If you want DOD:S, you'll have to buy it. It's not expensive (about £10 IIRC). There's also goldeneye coming out with steam sometime before xmas I think

Of course, there are other non-steam games to get also. The problem with CS:S and DOD:S is that there are no demos avaliable (that I'm aware of). Perhaps you should download the demos to FEAR and BF2. FEAR is a sort of single player creepy horroh type game with a small multiplayer mode, BF2 is a multiplayer battlefield game (unsurprisingly).

If you end up playing CS:S, feel free to drop into #hexus.cs on quakenet IRC, so you can play with a load of others from here .

From looking around and personal experiences there seems to be two main types of FPS:

One like unreal tournament, rocket launchers, ray guns, high tech wepeons.

And the other like Day of Defeat, realistic, normal real life guns, based around a War usualy.

Which of these is CS:S and HL2?

Think i may purchase HL2 that comes with CS:S. Where can i buy it?

Just downloaded Steam, seems very well made, and makes it easy for gamers using multiple games. If i buy the Half Life 2 on Steam for $39.95, will i get CounterStrike Source free?
Also there seems to be other copies of HL2 such as HL2:Capture The Flag, and HL2: Deathmatch, will i need to purchase these extra to use these game modes?

Im going to download and install the HL2 demo now and give it a try.

CS-S and DoD-S are both realistic type games. CS-S is round based (if you die , your dead for the rest of the round), DoD-S you respawn after a set period of time (10 sec usually). With CS you also buy you weapons / kit with credit you make during the previous rounds, in DoD you pick a type of soldier to be and get the associated weapons. In DoD you can change the type of soldier each time you die, but there are ofen server limits so yo cant have everybody as sniper, or all as MG's.
