Please suggest some 3-D games with open spaces

Why do so many games nowadays seem to take place in little corridors and rooms and buildings? I want to play a game like serious Sam and sacrifice where you can run or drive or fly around giant courtyards and landscapes.
Even in the first versions of doom there were giant spaces with all kinds of hidden passageways to get to the different accesses. actually hl2 does that, any others? Far Cry is all right but it's too covered in plants to see anything.
    Any suggestions?

UT2004. Most of the maps are rather large particularly in onlsaught matches. Oh and Farcry is just one huge open space for the most part. Older games i know but i dont know if you've played them or not.

Guild Wars has absolutely huge wide open spaces once you get out of the cities and outposts and into the wilds. HALO also has some decent sized outdoor areas but indoors it is a lot of linear corridors.

As Dorza said, FarCry is good for open spaces - if your PC is man enough... I recall there being a few levels in Call of Duty that had open spaces, but they had a linear route you had to follow on the most part. Kind of defeats the object, don't you think???

    Take care.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City or San Andreas are both massive games. That you can do anything anytime you want. Plus you can use the environment to do stunts etc in vehicles which is awesome. Both don't require and internet connection to play so you can play anytime and it's always fun

the games already mentioned, plus..World of Warcraft, TFC, DoD (original, not source), GTA, GTA2 (both much better than the 3d ones, but ok you wanted 3d games)
, Most space games - Homeworld/Cataclysm/2, freespace etc just to name a few.

The main reason for it (i *think* ) is the technical requirements of having such large maps. HL2 for example, gets around this issue by actually having hundreds of smaller maps, which you have to load every 10mins of play (grr). FarCry, BF2 and SS2 on the other hand take a different approach. IIRC SS2 and FarCry's engines were built specifically for large open spaced maps, and are heavily optimised for it. BF2 is just a big assed system hog

This is also the reason why most console games don't include wide open spaces, or have lots of load times. Consoles are old PCs in a box (after a few months), without upgrade potential. They often have relativly tiny amounts of ram (maybe 256, or 512 as a max - the n64 had just 4meg [8with ram pack]) and simply cannot cope with the large maps.

This ofc causes huge problems with portability of games between platforms - moving a game from PC to console becomes a challange..so alot of games are now done the other way round - developed for a console and then ported over to the PC. The result is cramped games with small maps, often low res textures and poor quality sound as the developer couldnt be bothered to include high res on the PC versions etc etc. Prime examples of games that have been ruined by this are Thief3 (loads more than hl ffs), Deus Ex 2 (y'all know how bad this was) and to some extent COD2 (although that was more an issue with the health system designed for console gamers)

Anyway there you go You can still find open space games, but look on the PC, consoles won't help you

Well........................the entire Delta Force series features wide spaces. Probably the widest.

When Novalogic introduced DF1 waaaaaaaaaaay back, it broke the mold by using voxels instead of polygons, but a lotta people didn't like the resultant graphics. Made for more realistic MP gaming though - had to think instead of be a Rambo, unless dying was your kinda thing. Could get sniped at 1000m+.

The newer / latest versions of DF are cool. I've been mucking around on DFX recently and having a blast, though def more Rambo-ish.

whatever floats your boat. I used to play Vietcong for the opposite experience - the jungle claustrophobia

Could also try Operation Flashpoint, which has these huge islands, but some folks find it TOO realistic. Used by a lotta armed forces for their training. Is also older than most games out there.

Might aswell mention Outcast then, It used voxels also but the worlds were literally huge and I'm talking massive and looked beautiful with high moutains and lakes and forests. Outcast 2 was going to be launch title for Playstation 2 until the developers went titsup. But there's a small community making a tribute game atm.

But yeh if you can get Outcast give it a shot. I spent litterally hours and hour playing it. There was so much to do in each level and the weapons rocked. The best flame thrower ever?

    Edit2: http://www.fileplanet.com/filelist.aspx?s=28885&v=0 for the demo

    hey all,

im new here...this would be my first post.

the biggest open field game right now is a game called WW2Online or Battleground Europe (the game has two names..the latter being the new name)

Its an MMOFPS based around 1942 Belgium, Germany, France and England. Ive been playing it for 3 years now..its an awesome game but its not for the average gamer..it takes a while to get to grips with.

    http://www.battleground-europe.com/s...ne/be_info.jsp

the game is available in the shops or you download from their site.

i hope it doesnt like im selling the game lol.

Baldurs Gate Series is great for open spaces (especially Baldur's Gate one...classic game!)

Also Battlefield 2 (already recommended) has massive spaces, try the multiplayer it's brilliant!

How about the X games, X2 and X3. Lots of open space if you take it literally!
