    Space Games - Suggestions?

    Hey Guys,
I've always liked the idea of Space Strategy games (whereby you have base planets/stations and build ships, manage resources etc), but I've never really looked into any good ones to try out.

So my question to you all is: Which would you recommend? I've heard of 'X2', but again, I don't have much knowledge of the topic. I don't mind if the game is a few years old either.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Go and get ur self a 14 day free trail of eve. I did a couple of months ago. Very hard game to get started with. It would be an outstanding game if you could establish your self in that world.

Homeworld 2 is another i would suggest even if it is a good 2 years old now. i still like to play it.

Thanks for your suggestions Dorza, I'll try out Homeworld 2. I should have said before, but I can't afford games with subscriptions unfortunately.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2. 2 of THE best games ever created.

Might also be worth hunting down Imperium Galactica 2, although it requires a bit of tweaking to work with XP (ive managed to get it working personally) it is a fantastic game, much better than that mediocre Star Wars empire at war which borrows from IG2 heavily.

Seriously though....... the homeworlds are the sex for this genre, both have fantastic skirmish modes but their campaigns are what make them.

I've played Homeworld, and it is a fantastic game. There's also a new Star Wars game coming out, from the guys that made Command Conquer (the ones before Generals) - Star Wars: Empire at War, and there's a demo available for it.

X2 and X3 are slightly different. You control an invidual ship, and can fly around and do the missions in it, or capture some other ships, or do some trading, or set your own space station to make money, or set up hundreds of space stations in a gigantic loop, or build a huge armada, or go mining...

So far on my list, I have:

    X2/X3
    Homeworld 1/2
    Imperium Galactica 2

Question is, which is better out of Homeworld 1 and 2? I've heard that seasoned players prefer the former, but for someone new to the genre, which offers the most?

I tried Homeworld 2, but for some reason, I just didn't like it. There are demos out, for Homeworld 2 at least, and probably for the original Homeworld, so you could just try those.

Thanks to the storyline, it is probably best to start off with the original Homeworld anyway.

like everyone else here i cant recommend homeworld 1 and 2 enough.... the single player is excellent and the story line is brilliant in my opinion...

and the space battles you can have in homeworld 2... beautiful is the only word lol...

u can get the patch, dl some huge maps, get mods that give unlimited units and resources then u can just have huge battles etc...

homeworld 2is similar to 1 but with a few game tweaks to do with units and of course improved graphics... theres also a star wars mod for homeworld 2... but that new star wars space strategy will be better in that area...

i cant wait for homeworld 2 on my new pc hehehee high graphics...epic battles...ooooo but defo play homeworld 1 and then 2... sets the story up and both can be picked up for about a fiver or tenner... definately worth it

Alot of people said homeworld 2 was a real step back, but i thought it was slightly more balanced and its what i generally return to.

For a new player i dont think it makes much difference both are quite hard as far as RTS's go but as homeworld is first chronologically and probably cheaper and easier to get hold of, go for that. Graphics are quite frankly excellent considering its a game from 98/99 (cant remember which).

Thanks guys, I'll go and buy Homeworld 1 and 2 tomorrow.

Also, I heard there was some kind of standalone expansion to Homeworld 1.. Worth buying?

(Oh, and anymore suggestions are welcome too )

I'll add my voice to the many others of Homeworld 1/2. It will run and look even better on today's GPU's. Let us know how you like it.

Homeworld: Cataclysm is fun enough for a fiver. I don't think the storyline really matters to Homeworld 2, but it takes place a bit after Homeworld 1. I normally end up playing the original Homeworld over Cataclysm, but you might want to play it just for the single player.

What was that ZX spectrum game where you had to trade between planets?

You would trade Nitrogen and stuff, that was great!
