Best out of Flight Simulator 2004

    Hi,

I'm trying to get the best out of Flight Simulator 2004.

    My specs are:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73GHz with Hyper Threading Technology (dual core)
    Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX
RAM: 4GB (XP shows only 3.25GB)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I955X Royal
    Operating System: XP Professional SP2
    HDD: 2x160GB SATA HDDs

Any ideas on what I can do to increase frame rates in the game?

    Thanks,

    Nick Collett

To get the best out of it, you really need a decent yoke, rudder pedals and six-lever throttle quadrant.. Also, a dual or tri monitor setup would be the way to go!

get rid of half of it annd try again.

4 mb will literally lose the information in the vast space....memeory isn't clever enough to keep track of where it dumps it. Intelligent ram is not here yet.

Im' not saying 256 would be best! try 1 gig and 2 gig.

Serioiusly....go to 2 gig and try again.

Aye, I agree with Zak... rip out some of that memory.

And also with TeePee, sort yourself with a yoke and rudder pedals at the very least...

Unless you fly the A320 often, in which case all you need are the autopliot on/off keys and the take off/land button for the autopliot!

I wouldn't bother with multiple monitors just yet... not until you start camping out at the end of Gatwick's runway, find yourself preferring your tea from a thermos flask and develop a penchant for anoraks and Time Team.

Well, nothing much really - the engine doesn't scale fantastically.

Are your hard drives in RAID 0? I've always found the biggest annoyance was loading textures the first time you go over a new area, so for smooth FS play I would maximise the speed of my hard drives if possible.

Short of buying new hardware, make sure you have all things that interfere with data turned off (virus scans, background defragmenters etc.) But do make sure to defrag the hard drives often- even better if you can get defrag software that re-orders the data on your drive for increased speed.

I generally get 25-30 FPS in payware aircraft (Level D sim 767, PMDG etc). I do have a yoke and rudder pedals at the moment, so I'm mainly concerned with my frame rates and, probably more importantly, fluidity of gauges and instruments in the Virtual Cockpit. Do you think reducing the amount of RAM will really make a difference? And, no, i've not raided my HDDs!

    Thanks for all your replies!

Flightsim is only really designed to run at 25fps. There is a limiter under one of the options, but removing it may cause odd effects.

What does actually equate to good fluidity of the instruments in the virtual cockpit? It doesn't necessarily seem to be FPS. Is processing power the key, or RAM? Or even something else? Like you suggested, i've now taken 2GB of ram out of my system. I've now got 2GB left, and i'll see how that goes later.
Any ideas on how can I ensure fluidity?

    Thankyou,

    Nick

Lack of fluidity is probably just a side effect of the virtual cockpit and I doubt there's much to do about it. I tend to use the 2d cockpit anyway which has very fluid gauges.

Have you looked for some 3rd party cockpits? There maybe some out there that run smoother.

Aye, I found the virtual cockpit, although good for the 'being there' realsim, was pants for gauges. IMC or night flying with virtual cockpit is very tricky.

You can connect more monitors to a PC using PCI graphics cards for instrument displays, for example. For scenery Wideview will let you run lots of monitors on networked PCs.

A USB throttle quadrant such as this would be pretty much esential on complex piston twins. I can't imagine getting decent control of anything with a wobbly-prop without!

Mind you.. I've never used FS2004, and none of my flying is 'virtual' .

In the likes of the PMDG 737NG, 747-400 and Level-D 767-300 I believe you can set the update rates for the gauges inside their own control panel.

I've just invested in a new system principally on the basis of appalling frame rates when using the PMDG Queen of the Skies at somewhere like Simflyer's New York or Gary Summons' Heathrow Pro.
When it (hopefully) arrives next Wednesday I'm hoping for a major improvement.

The FS engine has been constantly adapted for the previous 10 years to maintain backwards compatibility, and hence is a very poorly optimised piece of junk!

I was really really hoping for an all new engine for FS-X (seeing as it's taken an extra year), and stuff the backwards compatibility, but no.

If you're getting 25-30fps at the moment, then you're fine. I haven't tried FS on my latest rig, but I used to get 18 and I was good to go with that. You won't really get any better than what you have.

If you really want to optimise the performance of the current version, have a look at the forums on www.avsim.com . There is a wealth of info there for little tweaks you can make to get better performance. I'd give you some links, but it was a long time ago that I was looking at these things, so I can't remember where they are.
