    I Hate Steam!

Why is it that when I'm DLing HL2 and source that when I play a game or minimize the monitor that my download drops to 10kb/s Does Steam bnelive that if I'm not waiting/staring at the DLer that its not important for me to get my game?!?!?

Not really, Its not about a game but a deviously designed application. I belive it does this on purpase so that When I'm away it doesnt hog steams content servers bandwith. After all, I'f I'm not sitting here and waiting in anticipation why shopuld it bother to download at full speed?

I think they do it, so that for example if your downloading DOD source, and you want to play CS source whilst your waiting, you don't lag like hell.

steam annoys me in the sheer number of updates it requires

its so unique in that no other game needs updating as regular as that, and the updater itself being updated!

so you would rather your games were all just left to one update every 6 months? do you really want to be stuck out in the cold with a bug which gives you compatibility issues for 6 months? can you honestly say you wouldnt enjoy having constant production news and updates on your favourite games...ebbing them constantly to perfection?

steam is good, its normally your end if it is operating poorly

even if you cant stand it, you can be sure it wont go away so you may as well get used to it

whatever happens, peoples problems with steam will be nothing to the torrent of problems people will have if EA takes the route i expect them to and brings out something similar to steam.

yeh this is the drawback i see to steam...eventually there will be so many updates that a reinstall will take days for css... the idea is good but kinda annoying....

if u are updating ur games i never settly for anything less than 70kbs... if your download starts and the rate begins to drop, pause the update, exit steam and then log back on... now go to update it again and see if ur dl rate gets better... uaully u get shunted to another server that may have less traffic, i had my css going in the high 80s the other day when i reinstalled... i aint gonna wait days on 5kb a second... i aint on dial up lol

I despise Steam. It’s a good idea, but poorly executed.

I reinstalled HL2 yesterday. The total time from it installing on my HD, to having a working version of HL2 and CSS was close to an hour and a half.

Unacceptable. There is no other word for it.

The idea that I go to the shop, buy a game, take it home and installed it, have to sign up to a sub-acceptable service, decrypt the files that have just been installed, have updates forced on me (that I may, or may not want – often with little or no information on what its actually updating) annoys the hell out of me.
    Yay for DRM !

80KB / second is pathetic for a system like this. A couple of Meg is getting more and more common here in the UK (and lets be honest – we are still pretty behind the rest of the world when it comes to telecommunications).
If im forced to pay you for this “service” when I buy the game, you had better make sure that im supplied with a half decent one.

Here is another suggestion : Test the game more before , so it still isn’t being patched for the next 5 years after it is released.

On a unrelated note, I need to grab you on MSN sometime

You dont have to install the updates to play HL2, you only need them for CSS online. And its due to the patches and add ons that people are still playing what would be a rather old game. Many of the patches are to increase content, or to make use of new graphics effects on new cards. Just about all the online games insist on latest patches to avoid cheating. Try getting BF2 patches, was averaging 18kb/sec on the latest one from their server, they also have the buy a patch SF expansion.

I probably wasnt doing it right (i rarely use Steam and wont give it more than 10 seconds of my time), but Steam kept crying, giving all sorts of excuses when trying to play the single player part of it without updating.
