    PC Stuttering

I gave up playing games on my PC and got a XBox 360. The reason was I could just never get my PC to play games smoothly even though I have a X800.

Any advice as to what might be causing it ? It will just stutter every now and again and becomes very annoying.

I have noticed stuttering with alot of ATi graphics cards, and they all seemed to be using the CCC and they were all X1k series so I dunno how that relates to you but it seems that its a bug of some kind. I have not been able to find the reason behind the stuttering and I have not been able to find a fix other than turning all the CCC options to "Let the application decide".
Also people say it is not as drastic stuttering with 3rd party drivers, for example Omega drivers and DNA drivers. I don't want to post any links, but google and you will find

I had major stuttering in BF2 with my 9800pro before I worked out that I needed some motherboard drivers ... problem solved! your mileage may vary

Rest of my PC is 3.2Ghz Pentium 4, 2 Gb memory, 160Gb HD.

Worst game is Doom3 - stuttering is quite bad in this game. None of the settings are that high but it stutters every 5 seconds or so.

I have similar specs to you ( Just click my system ) And I used to get stuttering games like Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. I just installed the patches for the games when they came out and it was fine. Try that?

This is a common issue, and a difficult one to diagnose. Usually caused by a bottleneck at some point in your system, meaning data isn't getting to where it's needed as quickly as it should. The problem can be solved by drivers, and might even need a hardware upgrade as well.

The video card issue is a red herring though. Your X800 is perfectly capable, so you need to look further down the line - is your RAM fast enough? Do you have the latedt chipset drivers for your motherboard? etc.

I never had the issue with my 9700 pro, and don't now with my x1800 XT.

Indeed it can take quite a while to get a PC running smoothly. When achieved they punch above their weight, but I can definately see the allure of buying a system that's guarenteed to be set up right and have no conflicts (ie a console).

Check that all your drivers / patches are up to date first. Failing that, see if you can run a diagnostic on your Hard drive. Could very well be the graphics card at the end of the day!

Maybe try a few benchmark tests and see if you are achieving the results that you should - this will determine whether it's the game itself that is causing it or some other promlem such as mentioned in other replies.
