Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

No, it's not a forthcoming game from Ubisoft - it's a title conferred to those who have "significantly contributed to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance". Basically, a French OBE. And, as you've probably guessed from the forum this is posted in, this year's appointees include some games creators - two French, one Japanese. The only other knighthood for gaming that i'm aware of was an OBE for Peter Molnyeux.

    Those receiving their knighthoods are:

Well, everyone knows this geezer don't they? Shigeru Miyamoto is the man behind Zelda, Mario, and more - entertainment for millions for generations (including French kids, evidently). Well deserved.

The Ubisoft connection. Michel Ancel is the guy behind Rayman, and the woefully unappreciated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Beyond Good and Evil. He's tallented - but worthy of a knighthood? Hrm, you can decide that yourself.

And, the reason I'm interested in this knighthood lark - my uncle's nephew, Frédérick Raynal. Fred's behind Alone in the Dark and Little Big Adventure, amongst others, though he's sorta faded away since the Dreamcast died. Again, it's up to you as to whether you think he deserves honouring next to Shigsy.

Shigeru Miyamoto, in my opinion is unnatural--other worldly. I don't know how someone with such vision comes to be among us. I don't think one has to stand on equal footing with Shigeru Miyamoto to be great. If we held everyone to his standard, we would call every designer an utter failure.

well the direct translation for "chevalier" is "knight".

Edit: Did some more research. Chevalier is the lowest rank for members of the Order. There's no simple direct mapping between the Order of the British Empire and l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres - which has three ranks (Commandeur, Officier & Chevalier), no upper limit on the number of each - but a limit of 20, 60 and 200 recipients respectively per year (compared to 858 and 1464 per year for the uncapped OBE and MBE statuses in the Order of the British Empire).

In theory, the number of Chevaliers appointed since the Order was formed in 1957 should be fairly similar to the maximum number of CBE's appointed. Similarly, the number of Commandeurs should be close to the maximum limit on KBE's - so let's say that "Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" can reasonably be compared to a British CBE, and "Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" as a KBE (with "Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" as some non-existant medium between the two).

Whether you consider any of the french ranks to carry any weight compared to their British equivalents is entirely up to you - they're purely civilian, and awarded by the Minister of Culture for significant contributions to the French cultural inheritance. Then again, we've got plenty of TV personalities with CBE's.

Miyamoto is deserving of all awards it is possible to give him, including the very rare 'Lord High King Pimp Don Ninja of Time'.

As for the bloke who had something to do with Rayman... not so much.

Its a very fine game, but if we, or in this case the French, gave honors to everyone who had something to do with the release of a very good game, then there would be many other people deserving of a gong.

Everyone in Japan for a start...

Miyamoto is definitely worthy of it...the rayman guy? well I enjoyed rayman but it was hardly groundbreaking/unique/THAT original...

Alone in the dark and LBA were true classics too, not quite up there with shigeru but worthy of the title none the less imho
