I haven't been into PC gaming since 2004ish, but I think almost every game uses DX for controls, sound, etc. When we talk OpenGL and D3D, we are talking graphics (as hex said). It confuses people when they install and it prompts them to install the latest version of DX.
Direct 3D and DirectX are 2 rather different things...
