In-game advertising? For or against? or neither?

What's your opinions on in-game advertising? Does it bother you? Will it bother you if it becomes more intrusive?

For the most part, I don't notice it, but advertising is heading in a different direction, and we may soon see a substantial rise in the way adverts are presented within games.

Does it mean cheaper games as the software house is already gaining advertising revenue?

T'is a good point but I highly doubt they will reduce costs of games for this but just rake in more money from it, just my opinion.

As long as its not IN YOUR FACE all the time or ruining the game itself I dont see a problem, TBH as im a wow addict i dont play many other games and really have not noticed this alot

EXCEPT in Everquest 2 type /pizza and you can order Pizza hut to your door, amusing

I very much doubt it. People are willing to pay the current prices, so manufacturers will see it as a way to gain profit. Best case scenario is that it means that they may be able to spend more on development but I really don't think they'll say "Ahh, we're making enough money anyway, let's be kind to the customers".

As far as in game advertising goes, if it's stuff like EA advertising Need for speed on advert hoardings on the tracks in Burnout, those don't really bother me. However, if I got a window popping up on the screen offering me free emoticons with your emails!! just as I was half a second from blasting an evil alien into a gargantuan gooey mess, I'd probably be a bit annoyed

It also depends on the relevance and nature of the advertising too.

Just read the news story about it on HexusGaming, and I have to say if it was like commercial breaks, that would annoy the snot out of me. If it's something that I've already paid to own, I don't expect to have to sit through commercial messages whilst waiting for something to load. People wouldn't put up with forced adverts between programmes on DVD box sets.

Well, I'd like to think they wouldn't.

Yeah I agree with Mike. As long as its just an ad on a wall or hoarding in a game that wouldn't bother me. It may even make the game more realistic ya never know.

But if you got pop-ups in-game...I would go mental

    Depends on the game.

NFSU2 had tons - but amusingly I missed most of it at the time as I had world details turned down. That wasn't so bad apart from it being irrelevant to the UK buyer.

But how would you do them in a fantasy RPG?

arguably its a good thing. what if games started being consumed like tv - no cost as such, just adverts throughout to encourage people to buy. games could become free, which would instantly abolish any sort of piracy, and games developers would get revenue from anyone who used the game..

Actually i am amazed that more avertising has not been included games considering how mainstream it is now.

If it's done properly, it can actually enhance the gaming experience. Why, because having proper official decals on cars and boards around football pitches can make it seem more realistic feeling.

But it it was to get in the way of the gameplay and disrupt the flow of the story etc, i would be well against it and i would aviod anything with blatent in your face stuff and vote with my wallet.

I'm all for it, it doesn't bother me, and it (in a sense) makes the game feel more real.

Now I am not talking about big random banners coming across the screen, I mean, for example, games such as Need for Speed Underground. In the background you will see bilboards saying 'Best Buy' or 'Burger King' etc - which is fine by me, because, as I said before it hits a little realism into the game..

I suppose I would rather not have it in the game, but if it makes games cheaper in the long run then that's great.

If the game is significantly cheeper then I might be able to tollerate some. But if I pay alot of money for a game I don't want to have to deal with ads so some company can get rich. I guess putting real ads instead of fake ads where they make sense in a game is OK, but the savings should get passed on to the consumer. I just don't want games to be designed around product placement.

As long as its not intrusive I dont mind - i.e. the off billboard in a car racing game - that kind of thing. I hate this Nvidia/Ati rubbish that gets rammed down your throat every time you start some games however. For an example think of UT2004
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."

Yh as long as its not intrusive would be my opinion as well. As long as they dont affect loading times im cool with it, and as long as the game prices dont go up anymore than they are currently
