    Role Playing Game Needed

    Hi fellow RPG'ers

Here's the quandry. The last weekend, Sair/Rias and I went to a mate's with the Guitar Hero for a few cold beers and a good laugh.....

we had a great laugh...but it was playing Lineage 2

Now I was expecting to quite enjoy it, but did'nt expect my missus to fall totallt into it, and be imremoveable from the damn thing.

    The only problem...it's online only.

The postive thing she enjoyed so much about it was it's third person viewpoint, and the fact that the icon based controls were pretty easy.

Now Sir Andrew of Fort Gilbs (my bestest RPG pal) has built a fair character, so we had it easy, but simply put, we both enjoyed it immensely AND Sair was happy spending 3 or 4 hours that night, and another 3 the next day, fighting, gatrhering money, trading, etc...in fact all the things that I love so much about RPG>

But we need one that's not online!

Must be 3rd Person, must be single player.

What should we look at? Can't be WoW or DDO, and she never fell for Morrowind either due to the 1st person view.

    HELP

    thanks

Probably already tried it, but NWN? The community downloadable stuff makes it worth so much more.

NWN is definitely single-character. that's one of the main complaints against it compared to Baldur's Gate, where you'd get an attachment yto the computer-controlled characters who joined your party.

the ruleset for NWN is fairly complex though. perhaps Dungeon Siege?

Oblivion matey, choice of first and 3rd person view (press the R button) character is completely customisable and with decent hardware it looks gorgeous, the sound is incredible too which makes it an immersive game to play.

Apparently the main quest can be completed in 30 hours but there are also literally hundreds of side quests.

    Go buy it. now.

Diablo 2 with the expansion set sounds like what your after. In the same vein there's Divine Divinity and Sacred as well that are bigger more recent versions of Diable really.

IMHO the best RPG ever was Fallout.

    Right !!! Here goes !

The first Dungeon Siege is awesome (2nd is a bit ropey), you should get around 30 hours out of it start to finish and there is also an expansion for it.

Diablo 2 and its expansion, huge game with some great dungeons, also available on budget now so you can get the origional and expansion for a mere 20 notes.

Guild Wars, yes I know its online only but you can play it single player and use the henchmen in the towns for around 95 % of the missions, it took me around 130 hours to clock it start to finish. Not forgetting there is the HEXUS guild on that and usually someone about to take people out on it on some of the harder quests. Another great thing about Guild Wars is the fact that it has no monthly fees, so you pay for the game in the shop and thats it.

Baldurs Gate, more a tradiotional RPG with turn based play. Good but a bit dated. Another one from Black Isle to look out for is the awesome Planescape Torment.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion, you can play this in first or third person view and it works great in both perspectives. If you do everything and go adventuring within the game you can get around 160 hours out of it start to finish I have been informed.

If you have a PS2 there is Baldurs Gate Deadly Alliance 1 & 2, more in the mold of Diablo 2 this one but excellent start to finish.

Out of those I have mentioned I would go with Oblivion or Guild Wars, I'm still going at Oblivion and havn't lost any interest in it at all (Only thing that has stopped me is reviewing a few titles for Nick)

    Hope that one helps !

Zak, has Nick gave you my new mobile number yet. Would like to have a short chat if possible on Monday

Well, a Playstation and a copy of Final Fantasy 7 would do nicely. It it a league above anything else.

Oblivion is another solid choice. Great game, not a patch on the above, but still a great RPG.

Chrono Trigger is quality yeah, hasn't got the same epic feel as FF7, but its a fine game.

A Playstation, a copy of FF7 and a copy of Chrono Trigger then.

You wont find two better or cheaper RPGs anywhere.

I can recommend Sacred and its sequels, which now comes on a DVD in a collection set.

Also Spellforce, and if you like that Spellforce 2 has just been released too.

I think they can be picked up pretty cheaply now as they've been out a while.

If you have a few pennies left over, you could try to source a copy of The Ultima Collection. Ultima 7 is, imo, the best RPG ever released, and if you haven't played it - certainly worth a go.

Though you might have to whip out an old PC to play it. I remember installing it on my old 1700XP/NF7-S set up, and EVERYTHING moved too fast to follow. There might be a way of fixing that though, I'm unsure.

    Worth a shot though!

Thanks for all the suggestions people!

I tried Spellforce at the weekend... and although the whole principle of it is fine, I just didn't get on with it at all. It was mainly the movement control that I didn't like. I prefer using the mouse to move, look around etc.
Spellforce does zoom and move with the mouse, but only at certain angles, and doesn't keep your character in view which really bugged me (although I understand why it needs to do that for the purposes of the game but still...)
Also.. far too much "chat" when you meet new characters.

I'm not hugely against the whole online thing, its just the cost as I think I would feel I HAD to get use out of it. As I know I like Lineage 2 I may just do that, but maybe Guild Wars would be worth looking at....

    Mmmm...

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.
