    Test Drive unlimted for 360

Ok so the demo came on the marketplace on monday. What do people think of it?

I am less than impressed with whats on show. To be honest the demo is a complete mess. If microsoft wants to limit the damage done they should take it down quick

The framerate just isnt smooth enough. After playing burnout this feels like a previous generation game. The physics are woeful- try crashing into a car. The much touted graphics are (in the demo at least) nothing like they have been hyped up to be- the cars look great, inside and out but the environments (at least the ones shown in the demo) are not very good at all. The cars handalling is not what it should be...

It doesnt help that the demo is 15minutes of boredom with the only activity seemingly available is playing with the electric windows or doing a mind numbing time trial

I really want this game to be great. I can only hope that this is just a shoddy demo and that a lot of polishing will be done for the release to bring the game up to scratch.

I totally agree on this one, I was very much looking forward to this game but it appears to be an utter shambles. The first thing that hit me was the graphics! Considering this is a 3rd gen exclusive title the graphics are just about Xbox standard!

The handling is awful and the AI seems horrific. I know this is a "preliminary demo" but if the finished article is anything close to this I will NOT be buying!

Surely me and Bunji are not the only ones who have played this! Anyone else have any comments?

If the finished game is like this then it will be a bitter dissapointment

well it stayed on my hard drive for about 5 mins

    come to your own conclusions

are we expecting to much from these 3rd gen machines i wonder not every game is going to be grapically outstanding

and it would be a shame if some real good actual gameplaying games slip by the wayside cuz they are not pleasing on the eye

The trouble is the gameplay is awful. The graphics are a minor concern but on the evidence of this demo the full game is going to be useless.

I cannot believe the ammount of previews i have read about how amaizing this game is going to be

Im still hoping this is just a really bad demo

I couldn't agree with you more!

Although I don't think the final game will be anywhere as bad as the demo, it certainly makes you wonder.
My guess would be that MS felt the need to hurry along some demos in time for E3, and the bug ridden versions of Test Drive Unlimited and MotoGP are the end results.

The idea behind Test Drive is brilliant, whether they can pull it off...whole other ball game.

I got my X360 the other day and I actually like Test drive unlimited... the graphics are shoddy and the gameplay is limited (its a demo...) but otherwise I can see alot of potential. I'm waiting on MS to release an update for more resolutions (my poor 2005FPW isn't running its native rez!)

I played it for about 10 mins, can't say it enthralled me. Nick -gaming ed has played it and says that it is fantastic.

I know there's much more to the game that wasn't covered in the demo- I think we should have been given more.

I think if they can iron the stuff out ,and the different elements of the gameplay all come together, it could still be fantastic.

For all its fancy features its basically a racing game- nothing wrong with that BUT, if they want it to sell they had better sort the handling out...

ExceededGoku the lack of support for a res higher than 1366x768 was a pain when i was using my dell2005fpw. I think developers, gearing their games towards the HD era, are optimising them for 1280x720 and 1920x1080

In my long time spent at a secret location playing the game with a secret Atari bloke ( and no, I'm not being funny, I REALLY am not allowed to say where and who) and I though the graphics were pretty amazing, plus I've been told that TDU is the first game to be designed solely for the XBox 360 and not be a port or conversion from work previously aimed at a another platform.

I haven't had the chance to grab the demo yet as I've only been back in the country about 24 hours but as soon as I get a chance I'll download it and compare it to how I remember the game from the playtest.

Sadly, I wasn't allowed to shoot any footage or take any photos during the playtest so I'll have to rely on memory but I'll keep you posted!

I'm really looking forward to reading that comparison! That will really give us all a lot of insight on how far along the demo actually is.

I guess this means they are porting it to the PC from the XBOX version, but won't they at least be bearing in mind the PC port?

Let’s address issues as they’ve been raised:

Graphics: Unless you’re playing this on an HDTV, I suspect that you’re not going to see a graphical improvement. HD for this graphics to shine is pretty much crucial. However, I don’t think it’s fair to lay all the blame on the game. From how I remember the graphics in the playtest, I would say that they don’t look as good at home. That said, I’ve no idea what build the demo is compared to the build I played in the playtest. If the demo is from an earlier build, perhaps the environment wasn’t as polished… either way, I’ll try and find out.

Car handling: I’m not too sure what’s going on here, to be perfectly honest. I thought the car handling was fine and there was an appreciable difference between the cars on offer in the demo. The Shelby GT is a pig in turns and a monster on the straights, where the Lamborghini, though it suffers rotten understeer in lift-off corners can be caught with a dab of power.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, has anyone driven any of these cars? If you’re only experience of them is in another racer, perhaps it’s not a fair comparison to make? According to Atari, they ran all the car models, including handling etc past the various manufacturers and had them all approved, so the cars should behave as the real things do. If you’re playing other racers and the handling feels drastically wrong in Test Drive Unlimited by comparison, it’s not really a fair call. Try driving the cars within the limits of their models and they seem just fine… the Lambo fishtails like a sod if you try a swerve at 180 mph!

Gameplay: This being a demo, there’s a simply ENORMOUS amount of the game missing… HUGE amounts… MASSIVE amounts… get the picture?

The full game as we covered in the hands-on, will have an online and offline mode and you’ll be able to race other players for their cash and cars. The demo just isn’t long enough to give you a chance at any of that. Plus there’s the whole ‘lifestyle’ side of things, spending your cash on an apartment and stuff to fill it, kitting your character out in natty clothing etc. Then there’s the club where you can meet other players and voice chat with them… all of that stuff just isn’t possible to appreciate or try out in a 15 minute demo.

Overall: Yep, it’s a disappointing demo. It’s not long enough and doesn’t do justice to the game. The problem, I think, is that the game is so large in scope that a demo won’t ever be able to cover it satisfactorily. Until the question on which build this is can be answered, I can only say that it looked better in my playtest and again when I played it at E3 last week… but seeing as I have no idea how long the demo has been in preparation, I couldn’t tell you which is oldest.
