According to the recent Hexus news article, it was 429 pounds... I think i'll stick to my Amstrad console
The 60G only in UK has yet to be confirmed by Sony neither has the price been officially confirmed for UK. Most places are converting Euro to £ in the same way MS did for the 360.Originally Posted by ky2900

i think they'll hit £399. the euro price works out at £406, the us price somewhere around £350.. £399 *sounds* a lot cheaper than £425 so i recon that's what they'll aim for

It's still a hunka chunka money though...
I think it'll be Xbox 360 for me.
Bluray games for the PS3 are going to be £50-£60 NO WAY AM I PAYING THAT MONEY!
Been PS all the way, but it's time for a change.
It's a lot of money, but I think it will still sell. Too many people buy consoles based on the hardware - and hardware wise the PS3 is definitely impressive. Hell I am a nintendo fanboy and I half want one, just for the hardware. The high price tag will only re-inforce that opinion - as you pay more you get more, right? (or so many people will think) There will be a few cool/crazy japaneese games that are going to be PS3 only or XB360 only, but I doubt most of them will be released in europe, and probably not enough to warrent buying either console.
You're still much better off getting a Wii for games really, unless you want lots of re-hashed / sequels to PS2 games (or Xbox games if you get a 360).
a quater of the price, much smaller form factor and (in my opinion at least) slicker looks

£425 bit of a random price, much like £280 for xbox360. Seems likely it will be £399, dont see why Blu-ray games will cost £50-60, high prodcution value but then that will drop quickly as more companies utilise the format. The PS3 aint that expensive, if you consider it is a gaming system like x360 but also Hi-Def Blu-ray player which X360 isnt unless you buy additional HD-DVD drive. Also it has better connectivity utilising HDMI
the high cost of modern games is usually down to the production costs of the software - not the media. HD art assets are prohibitively expensive to produce, and the general cost of producing modern games has gone through the roof - with high prices needing not only to cover its own production costs but to offset poor sales of the company's other flops.
games on the HD consoles will be expensive.
myself i prefer the PC model to consoles. I pay for all my hardware when i buy the PC. Someone who makes a game for it dosen't have to give ANY money to ANYONE to make the game run on my PC.
PS3 at £425 is probably a loss to sony. Like the Xbox is/was/willbe to MS. But for each game you buy, a slice goes to that company.
Games deveolopement as hex said, is so expensive now adays (i sound like an old man) gone are the BBC B/C64 days of nocking up a game in your spare time that week. Now you need voice artists! Games have to do something new each time, and few companies are been smart about it (making an 'engine' like BattleField, or UT or HL2 and selling more games built on it). But its increasingly the case that its not the programming thats the cost, but the artistic stuff.
However the xbox360 has one major advantage over the PS3, ease of developement, it is after all a windows cutdown. Developing on windows is so damn plesently easy, projects tend to go so much faster. Same will probably be true for 360 vrs ps3, it was for ps2 vrs xbox.

While true, I can see Sony using it against us to charge more, claiming the disks due to their greater capacity and technology cost 'substantially more' to produce, possibly upto 5 times. What they dont say is that DVDs cost 5p a piece and the price change is neglidgable

there's still room for it - Xbox Live Arcade has a number of simple, fun, cheap games - such as Geometery Wars. Steam has made happy people from Introversion Software. It's only the "big" budget" games that really NEED to be expensive - and I'm waiting for the lot of them to crash headfirst into the uncanny valleyOriginally Posted by TheAnimus
hmm i'd disagree.. gt5, halo and other massive games are console-specific - one of the reasons i'll be buying a ps3 is for the latest gran turismo game.. looking forwards to itOriginally Posted by Spud1

Yes but I don't think there are enough to justify the cost. Halo arrived on the PC in superior form (once you patched it anyway), Halo2 will eventually make its way here and should again be better. That said Halo is a horribly simplistic game anyway, I wasn't a fan.Originally Posted by 5lab
GTA is cross platform, and tbh the 3d ones are poo anyway
GT5 well there you have a point, but its not worth 400quid+the game. How different to GT4 can it be anyway?...
Final Fantasy will sell loads, but then afaik there will be versions of that for other platforms, plus i don't rate it as a game anyway.
MSG4 again might sell lots of consoles, although just for its name (neither MGS2 or MGS3 were anywhere near as good as MGS, i dont expect MGS4 to be any different)
others I can think of off the top of my head are Tekken..but then soul calibre is better than that I think and im sure that wil be on the Wii.
I guess it depends on what games you want to play, but I just don't see enough good 'core' titles that you can't get in one way or another on a different format
