Games VS Vista Beta 2

I'm a big fan of running games on the wrong OS, so now I'm curious to see how your games fare.

This might end up as a big list, so I reckon it'll have to be in easily charted form. Take the following example:

The first column relates to whether the game installs at all (without hacking about unneccessarily). The second as to whether the installed game runs. The third as to whether the game causes a security warning dialog when you run it. The forth as to whether it runs "normally" (a bit slower than XP is to be expected). The fifth and final for whether the game integrates into the "Games" section of the Start menu

Be sure to state whether you're using the 32 or 64-bit version of Vista. I'm gonna put as many of my games as I can to the test this weekend.

Oh, and if something doesn't appear in the Games screen, then wait a bit - games have been adding themselves, with new artwork and ESRB ratings, as time goes by - which is rather cool.

Good idea on the list, although I'm just too tired to compile it in that form atm sorry :(.
Just installed HL2 again today, and have tried to run CSS on the 32-bit version of Vista.
Installs and runs fine, but massive artifacting...so not sure whether it's a driver issue or what...can be a good thing...textures are all over the place, which means sometimes I can see through walls/doors....handy...but damn annoying :)

Found the same with Civ 4 re the patching - I used FileMon in the end to find what it downloaded, and it turns out to be an InstallShield program which requires admin rights which is left in "My Games\Civilization IV\patch" in the user's profile.

Even fiddling the installer for Fahrenheit so it gets past the DirectX check doesn't work - the game launches a process which consumes 100% CPU time but doesn't display anything (works fine under XP x64).

It would also be very useful to have the grpahics card used mentioned here too - as ATI still has much better Vista support with it's drivers than Nvidia at the moment...

When I get round to installing Vista on my gaming pc I will post some updates:)

i got GTA: SA running fine with the normal install and everything on vista beta 2 32bit

for some reason steam installed and CS installed fine but wouldnt load at all, it just hung at the desktop

BF2 didnt run well but did install and did play (if only with the 20fps as opposed to around 40-50fps i can pull)

i didnt try any others

Baldur's Gate II is laggy graphically, I suspect as it only supports OpenGL rendering.

Sacred I didn't hold any hope for as XP x64 doesn't run it either - the copy protection they used tries to load a 32-bit kernel mode driver at runtime, and the authors have flatly refused to supply one that works on x64 platforms.

I think SpellForce's copy protection as being the reason it doesn't run - all that happens is a box appears with "the command completed successfully" in it (works okay under XP x64).

i was wrong, auto assault is laggy & crashes after a few minutes' play :(

A good point touched on, how do the OpenGL games perform? Is there a noticeable slowdown?

doom 3 (GL) performs. hl2ep1 (d3d) does not

i suppose the real test is trying a game with multiple renderers, like far cry or ut2004

I thought I read somewhere that ATI we're doing Vista OpenGL yet? Would make it graphic card dependant as much as anything else..

Interesting that you're testing x64 builds too.. WinXP x64 isn't the most game-friendly OS.. Just wondered if 32bit vista does any better.

EDIT: I note that OpenGL actually sits on top of DirectX in Vista - meaning big performance drops and a limited set of features unless ATI or nVidia provide their own integrated implementation..

possibly. interestingly, vista x64 seems happier than xp x64 about installing games (e.g. vampire doesn't install in x64 xp)

shouldn't make a significant difference, if done properly - those of us who play windows direct3d games in linux on opengl often get near-native performance, depending on the game

I agree - but unfortunately this is just another opertunity for MS to push DirectX to the fore - and I can't see them turning down the chance :( That said, there's good reason to go with DirectX 10 for desktop rendering as Vista's design means no penalties for context switching as on XP (hence why windowed games run slower and alt-tabing from full screen ones takes time). MS' primary goal will be to ensure DX9 stuff works as-well-as XP and that DX10 is faster (which it well should be from what i've seen of the architectural changes).

Keepsake launches and complains that the graphics driver was not found to be optimal, the result is that the movies and menu lag like hell - this may be an nVidia specific thing.

Hmmm, now that someone mentioned xp64 isn't game friendly it would be nice to have a similar list for it. Maybe it already exists - then a linky will be appreciated.

I am thinking of upgrading at some point reasonably soon. But was thinking that it may be worth waiting for vista as my rig still seems to cope with most games (even if not in high detail). Was considering getting xp64, but with vista possibly coming it may be a good idea to wait.

but generally speaking, take the list above, change all "performs: no" to "performs: yes" and mark every tenth game or so as uninstallable

Well, Vista is finally here and has been for about a month now. Think its time to resurrect Directhex's ecellent thread for further testing purposes.

I have Vista 64 bit ultimate installed and will be trying a few games out over the coming weeks / months. I'm using Catalyst 7.2 and onboard Realtek HD audio now (See my spec for the rest! ). so lets start testing again !!!

Broken Sword : Sleeping Dragon. Installs fine and runs once you enable XP SP2 compatability mode. Logic 3 gamepad also works fine. Installed into the games folder.

Warcraft 3. Once again installed great but I had to enable the XP compatability mode again to get it running. Also installed into the games folder. Doesn't appear to be running using hardware also. Looks like it is in software mode and resolution keeps dropping back to 640x480.

Riddick : EFBB. Installed with no trouble but after playing for about 10 mins locked up when I picked up a pack of smokes. Mouse pointer appeared and I had to close it with the task manager. Will look into this one further. It did install into games folder.
