What now for a military RTS game?

Having enjoyed C&C Generals and Act of War - Direct Action on the PC, i'm looking for a new strategy/military RTS game for my PC. The next C&C game won't be out for a while so what can I play in the meantime?

I didn't like Rome - Total War by the way as it was a turn-by-turn game. I need a real-time game, preferably a wargame.

Not millitary, but my brother enjoyed Age of Empires 3. I've played it a little, looks quite a fun game to get into.

Personally I like playing the total war series in skermish mode, and dowloading battles from the net. The close comabt games can be good as well

Another vote for Dawn of War here. I've just bought the gold edition and even though I have already completed the original levels, I am still enjoying going through them again and looking forward to the expansion pack.

Dawn of War is also excellent for LAN gaming.

I enjoy skirmish games against AI opponents (i.e. the computer). Does Dawn of War have a skirmish mode?

i really enjoy LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2...that has some excellent skirmish options

@Taz - another vote here for Dawn of War - yes, there is a skirmish mode, i would also recommend zero:hour if you haven't already got it.

Empire Earth + Art of Conquest expansion.

It's relatively old, but the gameplay is unrivalled. Empire Earth 2 is a let-down imo.

Dawn of War is one to get, and yes it does have a skirmish mode. Has quite a nice online mode too, played it a fair bit with some hexus guys last year over the net

Also, have you played the original Red Alert game? It is easily the best of the CnC series so far..graphics wise it's rubbish, but it has a really good skirmish mode, and the most fun i've had with an RTS so far

Spud1: yes, I have played most of the original Red Alert games but no longer have them as I gave them away. I only have three PC games at the moment:

- Act of War - Direct Action
- C&C General
- Rome - Total War

Of these, I like Act of War and C&C General. Hence, i'm looking for something along similar lines. I'm not too bothered about graphics. Important points for me are strategy, AI, technical excellence and the number and variation of units that can be built.
