there are *no* specification differences between the regular xbox and its limited editions, unless they're aftermarket changes made for the benefit of modchips and homebrew

Yeah I know what you are talking about, the xbox hdd's have chopped and changed dramaticaly over the years it's been in production, some of the 1.6 did ship with 20GB seagates but that wasn't all of them. My crystal has a 10GB samsung hdd...

late in the xbox's lifetime, larger drives were used, as they were cheaper for ms to buy - they were however only formatted to the same capacity as the original drives

All xbox production ceased last year ahead of Xbox 360 production. All factory spec Xbox consoles have 64MB RAM and a hard disk formatted to 8GB, although as early as 2003 10GB discs were being used and latterly 20GB discs were installed although they were again only formatted to use 8GB, although its more than likely that you can unlock the extra space if the console is modded. The only memory upgrades done were 3rd party mods which involved piggy backing extra chips onto the memory that was already installed. A similar modification involved a 1.4GHz Celeron chip being installed and a switch enabling the user to switch between the standard chip and the 1.4GHz chip. By all accounts the memory modification only really made a difference when using Linux on the xbox, whereas the 1.4GHz Celeron accelerated games.

PS. The "Crystal" Xbox wasn't a limited edition, it was a special edition that wasnt produced in specifically limited numbers. The only version of the Xbox in the UK to be produced as a limited edition was the "Green" version, which was limited to 2000 examples and supplied with 2 matching green joypads.
