Some of the comments have a point though, maybe coders should ut in a little more effort rather than exect everoneto puke out torrentsos cash for hardware.

No, it's consoles that are killing PC computer gaming - they offer a single hardware specification, great developer tools and defined platform specification over a number of years. They also have a huge market base.

Who wouldn't want to develop for that, rather than a smaller number of almost infinitely unique platforms ranging from the ability of a calculator to a supercomputer.

Epic guy is claiming that Intel should be raising the minimum spec to close the gap and make development/gaming better. But that's rubbish IMO - consumers will always want choice, and there are x million PCs out there that aren't being used to play games and consumers will not be happy buying more than they need (or put it this way, if Intel raise the bar, someone else will just step in and undercut).

Vista is going to do game developers more favours than they know - raising the minumum spec to something you can produce a decent game on. Then it's up to the developers to lever things like directX 10 to create a widely supported feature base from which simple performance factors can scale with power.

What do you expect?! People want to be able to do things faster, not play games on their work machines!

Worth noting, a large majority of pc owners are also console owners aswell. Different types f games for different platforms eg : fps always on pc, racing or football owns on xbox in surround sound. its that arcade type feeling which i love when gaming on console, but on pc i feel more erm, elite ! more engrossed games like fear for example pwn !! on pc.

    Indeed Recoil.

An FPS on a console with a joypad is like having a shower in a wetsuit. Totally wrong and should not be done

Consoles are fine for fighting, racing and platform genre's but it is totally wrong to even attempt a FPS with a joypad. What you need is the accuracy of a keyboard and mouse. Using a joypad in an FPS like battlefield 2 is akin to using Atillery as a sniper weapon

As for the gaming being killed off - I very much doubt it really. More and more people now are playing online ( even if they are all playing WoW .... *shakes head* ) due to broadband becoming more accessable to the masses.

I personally know of a LOT of CS players who are now playing WoW instead of CS every night and I myself have played WoW and enjoyed it for months on end

Anyway, back on track that article hits the nail where they go on about the minimum getting lower - yes it is and this has a lot to do with the attitiude that a 399 pound system with TFT would be a great PC for the whole family and then they hit the roof when they find that the systems not got a Texture and lighting support graphics accelerator card in so their youngsters can play Lego Starwars or similar. Also, they get even more unhappy when they give you the systems model and you deduce that there is no upgradability as the only slot available is a PCI Slot.

It's not intel that are throwing out these "budget" systems without upgradability is it? Who he really needs to whinge at is the builders of such systems everyone sees as a bargain.

I personally have to deal with people enquiring about getting graphics cards for these systems on a daily basis and the look on their faces when you tell them you cannot help due to the limited ports is of sheer horror.

Maybe it's us the general public to blame ?

We all want the cheapest systems available - and we want the performance of a super computer with a dedicated 3D capable GPU for as little as possible.

Good I say. Maybe if the video card race slows down we might start getting content instead of eye candy.

Game quality took a drop as soon as we started this race for better and faster, with companies moving on before the games writers had even tapped or got anywhere near exhausting the potential of current hardware.

Yeah but relying on things like input devices and online capability isn't all that great for the PC. The PC will usually develop those things first, but it's not beyond all imagination to see consoles develop devices that can be used in the popular genres - take the revolution for example.

I mean, who could have imagined that a mouse and keyboard would be good for a FPS? It's just wrong - something that was designed to help you write office documents being good at shooting things? There must be something better down the line, and consoles will get it.

And online gaming is now 'done' on consoles too.

As I said in another blog, the one area PCs win at isn't playing games, it's making them. Most games now come with the resources and tools used to make the game itself, in some capacity, and that freedom of creation is going to sit with PCs for a long time.

Nods! Consoles have been killing PC gaming forever - it's either taking a very long time to die or it's just that the two are quite different markets.

There's a place for both PC gaming and console gaming, and there always will be, because some people prefer one over the other for various reasons.

No amount of argument or justification will ever change that.

I agree that PC and Console gaming are different, yet they are getting increasingly overlapped as Console games are now being played online, as well as the ability to update console games online. With Windows Live Anywhere with Windows Vista it will be possble to play online games between users on both platforms, so it may transpire that the 2 become seemlessly integrated, although there is plenty of room in the market for both to flourish. At the end of the day it comes down to preference, some people like playing thier games on a PC using Mouse / Keyboard on a system that they have built or bought to suit thier exact requirements, whilst others will prefer the ease of use of console gaming. As for the whole Joypad vs. Mouse & Keyboard FPS debate i'm stuck in the middle, I can use both, its true that playing an FPS on a Xbox pad (controller S of course, not hideous massive pad) takes a little bit of adjustment and getting used to but after a while it becomes surprisingly intuitive, whereas I like the Mouse part of Mouse & Keyboard, it has to be said that the Keyboard has to be the most horrible gaming device ever (except the original Xbox pad of course)!

In the end PC gaming is becoming an expensive pursuit, as top line graphics are getting more and more expensive and becoming old hat increasingly rapidly, whereas a top of the line Console (Xbox 360 for example) costs less than a top of the line graphics card (nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX or ATi Radeon X1900 XTX for example) and offers a stable platform that will last at least 3 to 4 years. Even if you factor in online subription charges and higher price of games it's still cheaper than upgrading your PC on a very regular basis.

Having said this i'm still very much on the fence, using both my PC and Xbox for games and i'm more likely to upgrade my PC before I buy another console, though thats mostly because I use my PC for much more than just games, that being the real beauty of the PC, complete versatiility, whereas a console can do a set number of things the PC has the range of software to do just about anything you could ever want to do with a computer.
