Angry Argh how annoying is Battlefield 2?!

    Ok its rant time...

How crap are the coders or whoever are responsible for the construction of the game? My Battlefield 2 account (all the way back from the Demo release) is nearly 2 years old, and this game is just as buggy as the day it first launched on my computer. I've seen tons of console ports which were better than this, and its a famous fact that console ports aren't what they could be (not all, but some). The graphics, level design, etc are fine. But the game constructed as a whole is a mess! When they fix 1 thing with a patch, 2 bugs arise as a result!

Now I don't know whether this is unskillful teamwork and game construction as a whole, because instead of EA fixing this game, they don't prioritize it and make booster packs once a month, with an expansion pack, and develop whole new Battlefield games for other consoles, whilst working on the next Battlefield game, 2142.And why can't they make a game that has a bit more of the Source engine approach, simplicity, stability and speed?!?!

Actually I should stop here. I can write downa list of more errors problems and hates that can be fixed on this game longer than Peter Crouch's leg, but I'm gonna ask for some help this time around... don't care who flames me because tbh I get much better from what I pay for from other developers.

Does anyone know the best way to stop a crash to desktop once a game has loaded? It's very spontaneous, it's most stable if I join through Xfire, sometimes I get in no problem, most of the time problems happen though when I join through BF2 and the loading bar completes. It either crashes there or crashes when I press join.

I've tried pressing ESC instead of join, which is more stable but I can't always get to join. I've got utterly latest non-beta drivers for my sound/mobo/graphics. I've switched AGP Fastwrites off. I've installed latest Safedisc 4 drivers. I've deleted my "My Documents/Battlefield 2" folder. I've formatted and re-installed Win XP. I'm not sure what else to do I've heard this is a very common prob with the 1.3 patch and it's planning to be fixed in the next installment. Looking forward to the next patch, 1.4, OMGNEWMAP?! Can't be true!! EA don't do things for free! Must have been forced at gunpoint to give us Wake and this new Road to Jalalabad!

Many thanks in advance for any advice... other than that BF2 is a great game, I love the stats etc, pity that EA own the franchise though.

I suffer from the same problem, as you know, but less frequent. It happens about 1-in-10 map loads, amongst all the "server connection failed but retrying again works fine" annoyances.

The new patch is out as a beta, the small changelog I've seen does not suggest any bug fixes.. but it must do, surely?

geeze calm down and think logically for a min here

I'm going to defend DICE to the hilt here, as this problem is not all their fault.

Firstly - BF2 crashes alot for you, but not for the console ports, correct? Why is this you wonder? Simple. When you develop a game for a console, you are 100% certain that each official console will have exactly the same hardware - bar a tiny bit of extra ram in some (eg the N64 rampack) or a bigger harddrive in others (XB360). Either way you have a set hardware profile to develop for. The same CPU, memory, mainboard, everything. This means that you can develop for this hardware profile, and you test your code against it, and fix the bugs. So the developer (eg DICE) can be sure that the game runs well on that hardware.

Now for the PC market, things get ALOT more difficult. You are developing for hundreds of thousands of different hardware and software profiles, with different configurations in almost every machine. People also have different software - different versions of windows with different patches, different AV and firewall scanners, different pieces of spyware installed etc etc.

This makes it incredibly difficult (impossible even) to test your code for the PC market - you can't expect them to test against every single possible hardware/software profile in the world can you? They test as many as they can, and all the most common ones, but there will always be people with different configurations to what has been tested.

Granted, some problems are their fault - particularly when it was first released and there were lots of little bugs in the game, and some incompatabilities causing the game the crash for alot of people, but most are due to the wide variety of system configs out there.

Looking at your system profile you have a few huge potential problems for BF2.

    a) you have an old CPU, and its overclocked massivly. Resource intensive games like BF2 *HATE* overclocking with a passion - and its not supported by the game. Try running it at stock speeds and see if the issue still happens.

    b) You have mixed memory...never a good idea these days no matter what the manuals say...

    c) You have a modded mainboard bios..asking for trouble there, especially with that particular board (i've owned a few, had countless problems)

    d) Your on Be* - LLU based iirc...probably not the issue but could affect server disconnections etc, not the most reliable connection in the world from my own personel experience with them.

    e) I dont know your software config obviously, but it could be your AV or firewall, could be a bit of spyware/malware, a background app you run..try a 100% clean install with no AV and no firewall, nothing except drivers, the built in windows firewall and all the windows updates - see if the crash still happens.

I'm sorry if I seem overly aggressive here but it just really annoys me when people blame the developers because their game crashes, without understanding their problem developing the game, and especially when they run a none-standard configuration

Thanks for the post, and I can understand all of what you said. The reason I lash out like that though is because this is the only game that I have troubles with. Every other game works fine first time, usually without having to patch it.

The reason why I referred to console ports being more stable, is not games on consoles being more stable, but console originals being transferred to the PC being far more better. For example, how comes GTA: SA doesn't need a patch (well one came out to fix something we all know about ) and it runs really well and fine on my system? Or how comes Devil May Cry runs perfectly fine (however not changed at all from the console version, very annoying, doesn't even have an Exit Game button).

I am fully aware that developing games for the PC is a huge task, and to get it right is a handful, especially with all the operating systems and ranges of hardware configurations out there. But why do so many other games get it so right, a lot of them being far less popular? Battlefield 2 has nearly been out for TWO years now, and they are not prioritizing what's important. Instead EA or Dice or whoever are being greedy, and instead making so much extra content we have to pay for (that hardly anyone buys or plays) because they are greedy for more money. In fact, they probably aren't greedy at all, but thats the assumption they lead many of us to.

Thanks for the help but I've tried the majority of those I run NOD32 and Windows firewall as my only security method (hey, it works ). My system config has been the same for quite some time now, and only changed the broadband and sound-card during the two years. Battlefield 2 never used to do this before, I used to suffer with the other problems (bad in-game browser, menu lag, etc etc many more). It's just in the 1.3 patch (Google battlefield 2 crash to desktop if you don't believe the severity of the situation) they've made a few things worse. Why fiddle with the join button in the first place -_-... And this was the only game I've heard of in ages that never launched with 1280x1024... people had to resort to hacks in the shortcut to force the game to that resolution, until a patch quite a while later saved them the effort. And this is still one of the very few games out there that doesn't support widescreen ^_^ Out of all the top 10 games on Xfire, I think this is the only one.

    Nice effort, Dice/EA.

@ Toby, lol yeah they've got Beta 2 of their patch now, but its more fiddling with gameplay (which I don't mind) and like hardly any bug fixes, if any... I hope they do them and just don't write them down..

Because BF2 is a PC game converted for consoles - not the other way round.

It is also a much more resource intensive game than the likes of GTA:SA etc (running on old, outdated engines) and consequently works differently...

As for them working on content instead of patches - thats wrong, simply not true. They will have a separate team for creating new content etc, and a separate team for patches/bug fixes. Like it or not when a product is shipped some of the team will move to other projects, some will stay working on bug fixes (which is a mammoth task, if you have ever done any bug finding/fixing it can be a nightmare - reproducing problems is normally almost impossible, and unless you can reproduce a problem you cant really fix it).

You can't compare games running on different engines stability wise - they will often have totally different ways of interfacing with the individual computers software/hardware - and consequently work differently.

Hundreds of thousands of players play BF2 and other games fine every single day (every second i guess lol), you only hear the bad stories...

If you want a game guarenteed to run perfectly - buy a console. You lose out on flexability of control, you lose out on graphics and performance, but your guarnanteed that it will work..

I assumed they will have a seperate team for different elements of the game, such as art and content design, and engine structure. The graphics and level design etc of the game are fine. I'm happy with it.

But what I can't get over and what no one answers, is why every other game is far more better designed, and this one so poorly made? Why is something so simple as the interface so damn laggy? Why does my computer go into such intensiveness during account log in for 10 seconds that I can't even minimize? What makes it different from games like Half Life 2 and Trackmania Sunrise which use high graphics far more better at doing what they do?

Don't get me wrong, Battlefield 2 has many highlights and things I enjoy about the game, which is why I keep coming back for more at the end of the day. Slightly erratic play times, if that but I still play it. I think they have greatly improved graphics performance since the game came out too.

And thing is, why do I hear so many bad stories about EA and Battlefield 2 more than most other games? I remember coming across a huge HardOCP thread asking the reasons you stopped playing BF2 or something like that, and basically the entirity of the responses were sick of playing such a buggy game. This wasn't way back during release too.

To be honest, I've paid for this, so I've got all the right to winge about fixing this game I guess. I've just come back to BF2 after playing loads of CSS/WoW which are two far better designed games. Perhaps they have had more maintainence than Battlefield but whos stopping the patch team from increasing size/workload? ;D

Anyway I'm done, I don't wanna start a fight or anything lol, just wanted to share my fustration. These are thing's I will probably never change my mind on, since I have like 200 hours of BF2 experience now (http://www.xfire.com/profile/unre4l) so I've made up my mind on my opinion until I see that EA have fixed it or whatever.

I promise I will leave you alone in a moment, but you seem to have missed my point earlier

Firstly - you are right about one thing, the interface is shocking, and this was a bad design choice, which it is really too late to change now. It has got alot better though recently, but the server browser in particular is still shocking. i think its based on gamespy tech which is a bad start already...

As I said above - its totally unfair to compare it to a game running on a different engine. They all use your machine in different ways, using radically different technology - thats like saying why is my Motorbike more reliable than my car (or vice-versa) You can't really compare.

You might see more BF2 stories because of what forums you read, where there might be a disproportionate spread of gamers. I personally have not seen many threads about BF2 - I have seen many more about CSS and its problems than BF2. Another reason why you might see more is that the game is so popular - therefore so many people have it and there are more ppl to have problems/complain than say..trackmania sunrise which has a tiny percentage of players compared to BF2.

Whats stopping the patch team from being bigger/taking on more work? Money, simple as that. You don't pay a monthly subscription, and you get loads of servers to play on, a persistent stats system, free patches with new content...what more do you want? The game runs fine for 99% of players out there, and EA are spending what (say a team of 10 people, on 50k a year), 600k a year on developing patches for that 1%? If you were paying a subscription then thats fair enough but your not...EA and DICE exist to make money, they wont sacrifice half a million in profit to please that last 1% of people with none-standard PCs.

Wow and HL2 are completely different, wow is subscription based, and HL2 etc has a different business model, with new games constantly being developed on the source engine - so bugs will be found alot faster and fixed easier. The Steam hardware profiler will also help here, giving the developers access to many differernt system configurations so they know exactly whats going on in each system - which is a huge boost to bug fixing. Granted EA include a tool like this - but how many people who have a crash will actually run the profiler and upload the data? Almost no-one..

Once again I will re-iterate that you cant compare it to a different game unless its built on similar technology, which afaik no game is at the moment...

Ok good points made, I was gonna give a huge reply again but I think I will save it for a book or something

I think though that your estimate figures are a bit somewhat fictional even for an estimate... BF2 must have huge server costs for the stats system, but I think they get plenty of income, the game has never hit below £15 before, the expansion pack has been out for quite a while, two booster packs (That need no middle-man because it's a direct online purchase), along with the future income from BF2142... and I assume they get a share of all the rental costs or whatever from public ranked 3rd party servers. Then they have all the console iterations of Battlefield they seem to quickly develop. Every single person I know personally who play or used to play BF2 (I know quite a few) ALL suffer from this prob. Some more erratic than others, some quite rarely but still get it.

Also I agree with you on the Gamespy bit LOL everything based on gamespy seems to be a bit hit and miss :/

I tried installing Special Forces today (got it because I had a £5 play.com voucher ) and when I went to play it, lol,

I'm gonna give it a reinstall methinks.

I have to say I'm not happy with DICE/EA either. I know it's tougher to code for a PC game than it is a console game, but thats no excuse, other developers manage it perfectly fine.

What really bugs me is that they're focusing on 2142 now, not very long at all after BF2's release. I mean they could at least make the game more playable before they devote time to 2142 (I know, separate teams for 2142 and BF2 patches but they could focus on BF2 a bit more). It seems they've realised that the BF2 code is beyond repair so have decided to pack it in and start a new game from scratch, what annoys me also is they made this game focusing on internet play yet have made the game horribly cluncky to get into games quickly; the unskipable videos at the start are a real pain (and now deleted off my hard drive), the menu takes far too long to load up and the server search function is just a joke.

On a positive note, the game is bloody fun when you can actually get in to play it.

Don't know if you know this, but you need to repatch Bf2 after installing SF.

I had the very same problem you did, I grabbed a few new hard drives and reinstalled everything and it happened to work that time : /

Well alot of people say special forces is only worth it for the weapon unlocks, I have to disagree, it is really fun. The weapon unlocks are a good advantage to it and I would buy it just for them, but some of the maps are also alot of fun. I'm having alot of fun playing Warlord and Ghost Town right now.

EDIT: I suggest you avoid the booster packs though, you arn't missiong out on much really.

I gave up playing BF2 after a month or 2 just too many annoying niggles.
