    E3 Cancelled!?

    Virtually everywhere at the moment:

Next-Gen has the scoop: Doug Lowenstein, the president of the Entertainment Software Association is expected to announce within the next 48 hours that E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the definitive video games show, has been cancelled. Industry sources have told Next-Gen that the reasoning behind this move is primarily one of cost versus return. Publishers aren't getting the media attention that they expect from the large amounts of cash that they're putting down to exhibit at the show.

Apparently publishers believe that the multi-million dollar budgets allocated to E3 would be better used on smaller, specific shows where publishers get all the limelight. There's the possibility of a smaller show taking place in May next year, but as Next-Gen puts it, "it's clear that the days of an industry event attended by all the major publishers, spending big money, are gone."

Is E3 an industry only show, if so then that could be the problem, if they opened it up to the people whom they are trying to interest they may get somewhere. For example motor shows are open to the public and potential customers and they do good business

What they need to do is open it to the public and move it to Excel in London

Neowin reckon its been downscaled and not canceled. Their saying its going to be more like a meeting of a few 100 rather than wide open to thousands. It would be a shame either way I have to say.

I think it's E3 that needs promoting more. If you'd asked me what E3 was 2 years ago I wouldn't of had a clue.

If more people knew (especially the console type gamers who don't go on the internet), then I think they would get a hell lot more publicity. Making it smaller, to me, will just make it worse and more unpopular.

Utter rubbish! I'm a console gamer before i was into PC games and have known about E3 for years. There was enough info about it in magazines before the internet truely took off.

If anyone is serious about games then they know that May brings E3, ALL the gaming site/magazines will be full of information before/during/after the event. E3 is a trade show that has grown beyond the normal type of trade show, what they should have done is open it to the public after the industry has had their look in. The same thing happens at motor shows, so why not with E3?

This is tragic news, we had a similar thing (for a year) in London, I think it was at the Excel, called Game Stars Live. It was absolutely amazing, so if E3 was bigger and better then I can't believe that they will be cancelling or even downscaling it... It just brought soo many gamers the chance to see the future of gaming as a whole.

it could be a good thing. Game developers will now not have to waste time preparing demos and **** for E3.

I deffinately agree with Smokey on this one. For years publishers have been set back by expective deadlines for E3, things need to be "ready for E3", whether its simply a video of your latest game, or a full blown demonstration, people expect it at E3, and i'm sure that because of this, the quality of the game, or at least people's perceptions of the game are strung at ridiculous levels.

If the developers could concentrate on making their game ready for release, and not pissing about with E3 deadlines, im sure that it would help the industry no end.

Ok, so E3 is very sexy from the consumers point of view, you get free stuff, you see all the latest games, and generally get to enjoy a haven of video entertainment for a whole day, but I would certainly agree that smaller more localised expos would realistically be much more advantageous to the publishers, and possibly better for the consumers, because although E3 was all very well and good, can you afford to get a flight to america every year to experience it? I doubt it.

    Ben

Hopefully this will mean that the'yll spread some decent shows around the World rather than cancelling them at the last minute.

Not really. I could of asked loads of people from my school, ask friends, etc etc - and I bet 99% of them don't know what it is. I guarantee it.

shame ECTS has been binned now (the european version, I went to the last one..was almost empty ), and now possibly E3?

iirc wasnt the gamestars event a public thing? the whole point of trade shows is that they are not for the public
