I still think AOE2 with the expansion pack is great. Warcraft 3 has one of the best stories in a game I think I've played (and you have to love Blizzard's video clips). I know you said you didn't really like the Total War games, but Rome: Total War is good fun.

    Online StarCraft >> *

Offline I recommend the C&C TFD pack but give generals a miss.

Homeworld 2- For an awesome, great looking space RTS.

40K: Dawn Of War & Winter Assault- Modern, fast paced RTS.

Warcraft 3- Brilliant story, great characters, quite long.

Star Wars: Empire At War- Not as good as any of the above, but lots of fun, especially the space battles.

C&C Generals: Cool units, graphics, uber weapons.

I will also chime in with "Dawn of war" it is a great RTS, the single player is a bit modiocre but it really comes into its own on multiplayer.

You can pick up DoW + winter assault for £25 atm.

I would also reccomend Civ 4 as I have been playing a LOT of that, there are some of us that get together for on-line multiplayer and that really burns the hours away.

will second G4Z and say Civ 4, its highly addictive, and is one of the few games where i've needed to read the manual

War - Act of War (and the add-on pack) are pretty nice and havent been mentioned yet, might be a bit too like C&C Generals for some peoples taste.

Non War - Sim City 4 wasnt to bad but I could never get into it as it seemed like it took days just do do something.
