When you get a game that doesn't allow any changes to be made to controls and visuals.
I say this as I decided to get Da Vinci Code yesterday with knowing that Neverwinter Nights was nearly finished. I know its not a superb top title game but I got it as it is something to think about whilst playing with its puzzles, may last me a little longer.
Once I started it up I noticed that the control set was the familiar W S A D used in shooters. This is not to my liking as I always do my key binds similar to Unreal using the cursors and then map keys like right control and Num 0 for crouching and jumping etc. Upon further inspection there is no option to actually remap anything at all, not even an option to play using a pad. Then to top it all off I went into the options that deals with visuals etc, the only thing I can actually do with the graphic setting is change the resolution and that's it. It is extremely annoying looking at this from a PC gamers point of view. These two options alone are the first things that most PC gamers will look at, sure I'm not the only one that does this.
Anyhows I spent around 2 hours this morning plodding through all the config files in the installation. I managed to find the control config pretty quickly and there was everything mapped out, thankfully it was pretty easy to understand. I managed to map the game to my pad and started playing, unfortunately I ran into a few probs once the first reaction type mini game started. Opening a window has never been so difficult ! I just couldn't get the required accuracy with the pad to do it. So then it was back in and remapping yet again to keys I like to use. Once again I ran into probs, the game doesn't like keys mapped to the numpad. So once again in and out of the game continuosly doing the same bit till I manage to get a comfortable set of keys that actually work ingame.
Thankfully it is working now and I've got through the first level, interesting game I think and should keep me going a week or two.
