Rumour control : HD DVD drive inside Xbox 360

Rumours are gathering pace that the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 may be incorporated into future models despite Microsoft saying that they had no plans to do this. Seems like common sense that they would do this anyway.

How so? You'll get an external drive addon and they're not obligated to _never_ upgrade the '360 just because people bought them. It's not as though HDDVD drives were ready when it launched!

You do get the add-on, and it's hardly like a new graphics card coming out every 6 weeks

I can see this happening after xmas. It would be stupid for them not to build it into the unit considering that the PS3 has the Blu-ray drive.

They may do something for the early adopters like they did when original Xbox had a £100 price drop, they gave people 2 games and a controller. Fingers crossed they're feeling generous.

How so? Well, i am an early adopter who has payed the full price for the console and now microsoft are (probably) releasing a technically superior version. You must see why this will anger a lot of its customers . Simmilar situation with Nintendo and their DS update. Oh well.

if you want the HD DVD addon then buy it. No doubt the xbox360 with HD DVD built in will be more expensive than a regular xbox360 so where's the problem. Its not like the actual gaming aspect of the console will be better or more powerful. If it was then I could see your point.

It's been out almost a year now, it's hardly like they released the '360 2 months ago now is it?

I personally wouldn't be suprised if they did trade in's for old consoles without the HD-DVD drive in exchange for new consoles.
Take your old console back, pay the extra on top and get a new one with the drive built in.

It's all speculation at the moment of course, I think Microsoft are playing their cards right and waiting to see what happens with HD-DVD and Blu Ray.
Who knows, should Blu Ray somehow turn out to be the clear winner, who's to say we won't see an external Blu Ray drive?

At the end of the day it won't bother me as long as they don't start releasing games on HD DVD. I wasn't planning on getting a HD DVD anyway until they've been out for a while.
